Toyota has officially launched the Land Cruiser 250 Series in Japan with many variants, including two First Edition versions. Also called Land Cruiser Prado or simply Land Cruiser (as in the United States), the 250 Series joins Line 300 And Line 70 to form a complete Land Cruiser product line in Japan.

Compared to the previous Land Cruiser Prado, the new 250 Series is much larger, 4,925 mm long (+100 mm), 1,980 mm wide (+95 mm), 1,870 mm high (+20 mm) and has a wheelbase of 2,850 mm. (+60mm).

It is important to note that the 250 Series is not a “baby Land Cruiser” like the previous Prado. In fact, both are built on the same GA-F version of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) – the ladder frame structure is also used for Lexus GX And LX.

Looking at the dimensions, the 250 Series has the same wheelbase as the 300 Series but is slightly smaller in other aspects, including overall length (from 25 to 90 mm), width (from 0 to 10 mm) and height (75 mm).

As Toyota explains in an infographic, the 300 Series represents “upscale and luxury” in the Land Cruiser world, while the 250 Series is in the “practical” zone and the 70 Series is considered “solid and enduring”.

In Japan, two engines are offered for the Land Cruiser 250 Series. The first is the 1GD-FTV 2.8-liter in-line 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine that produces 204 horsepower (201 horsepower or 150 kW) from 3,000 to 3,400 rpm and maximum torque of 500 Nm from 1,600 to 2,800 rpm.

Meanwhile, the second engine is a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated 2TR-FE inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine, with a capacity of 163 PS (161 horsepower or 120 kW) at 5,200 rpm and 246 Nm at 3,900 rpm. The petrol engine is mated to a six-speed ‘6 Super ECT’ automatic transmission, while the diesel engine gets an eight-speed ‘Direct Shift-8AT’ automatic transmission.

Both powertrains come standard with a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a center Torsen limited-slip differential as well as an electronic rear differential lock. The front stabilizer can also be changed from free to locked at speeds of 30 km/h or more using a switch in the cabin. The Multi-Terrain Select system includes six modes available to the driver, along with the Multi-Terrain Monitor that uses a camera to help provide better visibility off-road.

There are three levels, namely GX, VX and ZX. The VX can be equipped with a gasoline or diesel engine, while the GX and ZX are only available with a diesel engine. Prices start from 5.2 million yen (about RM161k) for the GX with diesel, while the petrol VX is 5.45 million yen (RM169k). The diesel VX and ZX are priced at 6.3 million Yen (RM195k) and 7.35 million Yen (RM228k) respectively.

Japanese customers can also order the ZX and VX models as First Editions, with quantities limited to a total of 8,000 units. First Edition cars are reminiscent of previous Land Cruisers with a design that features round headlights instead of the multi-element rectangular headlights on the standard variants.

Both the VX and ZX trims offer seating for up to seven passengers (2-3-2 layout) while the GX only seats five. All trims come standard with the Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver assistance systems, including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and more. A wide variety of accessories are also available from JAOS and Toy-Factory in addition to genuine Toyota parts and Modellista items.
