Top California Owner Jed Cohen Dies at 89


Jed Cohen had to assemble a group of friends to buy his first racehorse in the early 1960s because no one had the $2,500 needed. stubborn Jenny runs like a $2,500 commodity, and when her trainer suggests Jed buy a goat to help calm her down, Jed thinks he’s bought the wrong kind of animal.

Jed once recalled: “We bought a goat, but the goat was stronger than the horse. “We should have spent $2,500 on goats. We did the opposite.”

Cohen, whose family runs in the name of Red Baron’s Barn, and Rancho Temescal, the current top owner at Del Mardied on November 27 in Del Mar at the age of 89. Cohen has for the past few years battled illness, but he enjoys watching his horses race, whether at the track or at home.

Son Tim Cohen currently manages the stables, but Jed founded the operation decades ago. While their most successful bet winners are from Europe, they have also bred many good runners at their Rancho Temescal in Piru, Calif.

Jed grew up in New York and learned to love racing from his father, Harry, who often watched races at Belmont Park. Jed moved to California in 1959 and became a successful advisor and investment banker. He’s always wanted to own racehorses, especially after Wayward Jenny won the $3,500 race at Santa Anita in 1961.

Cohen’s experience with California hybrids dates back to George A. Pope Jr., owner of the 1954 Kentucky Derby winner. Purpose . Cohen bought arbitrary , son of Determine, from the Pope after the horse won the Shares of the Royal Lodge at Ascot. Domineering is a big bet runner in California.

Other equity winners Cohen has raced for, often in partnership, include millionaires River Boyne 2020 Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1T) winner and six other stakes, and itsinthepost , the winner of the Charles Whittingham Stakes 2018 (G2T), the Champion Stakes John Henry Turf 2017 (G2T) and six others. Jeff Mullins conditioned both runners.

With Coach Mark Glatt, Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal racing Sharp Samurai , another millionaire and classified bet winner. Glatt also trains Dr. Schivel for Red Baron’s Barn, Rancho Temescal, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and William Branch. 2020 Runhappy Del Mar Futurity (G1) winner, Dr Schivel finished second in the 2021 Qatar Racing Breeders Cup Sprint (G1).

<p>Jed passed on his love of horses to his children, Tim, Mark and Linda.  It continues not only with racing stables but also with thoroughbred after-sales care.  Many of their runners have gone on to fine second careers, and Jed is the saver <span class=supply .

Jed bought Suances separately in France before the 2000 Emirates Airline Prix Jean Prat (G1), which the foal won. In Arlington Park Before the Secret Stakes (G1T) event in the summer of that year, Suances kicked into a store, ruptured a tendon and nearly took his own life.

“Sure, I want to save him,” Jed said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a cheap or expensive horse.”

The efforts of Jed and Vienna allowed Suances to return to the race. Suances won the San Francisco Breeders’ Cup Mile Handicap (G2T) in 2002, beating the final graded bet winners The Tin Man , Sarafan and Dearchy , and Suances also won the Dallas Turf Cup Handicap that year. Following his racing career, this horse then stood at Rancho Temescal until his death in 2019 at the age of 22.

In addition to his three children, Cohen is survived by his wife, Bobbie, and two grandsons Cole and Cody. Tim Cohen said that a celebration of longevity will be held in the new year.
