Thursday press conference: Police deployed at US facilities


Police across America entered campuses where pro-Palestinian protesters had set up camp and occupied academic buildings. Students at some universities remain entrenched, showing no intention of backing down.

The University of California, Los Angeles was the site of one of the most violent clashes. A group of about 200 protesters stormed the Palestinian garrison in an attempt to demolish it. Both sides threw objects, fought and sprayed chemicals in confrontations that lasted several hours.

Nearly 300 protesters were arrested in New York, Mayor Eric Adams said. They include Columbia student, where protesters have occupied a building. The school principal asked police to remain on campus after the graduation ceremony, scheduled for later this month.

More than 1,600 protesters have been arrested at US facilities in nearly two weeks, according to a Times tally.

In the Middle East: Antony Blinken, the secretary of state, called out Hamas accept the proposed ceasefire agreement during a visit to Israel. “It’s time,” he said.
