Along with the EV version of the Jimny scheduled to launch in 2030 (one of five new Suzuki battery-electric models likely to be launched by the end of the decade) and the hybrid version due before that, Suzuki is still considering releasing the Jimny pickup globally – perhaps continuing to use the Mighty Boy nameplate.
At the recent launch of the new Swift, CarSales asked Suzuki Australia general manager Michael Pachota if a Jimny pickup was in the works. His response was: “I would say the project is not dead yet.” Back in 2018, Suzuki showed off an incredible Jimny Sierra Pickup Style Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show, and it could easily be incorporated into the production design.
Jimny sales are up 50 per cent in Australia this year, and CarSales says it takes six to eight months to get them into dealerships. Suzuki could easily replicate this success in the US, where the market for small, affordable off-roaders is virtually non-existent. Bringing the Jimny to the States would likely start a cheap off-roader arms race, but it’s unlikely to ever pass our stringent crash-test regulations.
