The winners of the 2024 Mangrove Photography Awards have been announced.

Overall Winner, Mangrove Photographer of the Year, Supratim Bhattacharjee

The organizers of Mangrove Photography Awards announced the winners of the 10th edition of the competition honoring these fragile but vital ecosystems. Organized by Mangrove Protection Action ProjectThe awards received 2,500 entries from photographers from 74 countries, highlighting the importance of mangroves globally. Winners were chosen in six categories—Mangroves & People, Mangroves & Landscapes, Mangroves & Underwater, Mangroves & Threats, Mangroves & Wildlife, and Mangroves & Conservation Stories.

Finally, Indian photographer Supratim Bhattacharjee was crowned Mangrove Photographer of the Year, capturing the judges’ attention with a powerful image of a young woman standing in front of the ruins of her tea shop in the village of Frazerganj in the Sundarbans after a devastating storm. As the world’s largest mangrove forest, the Sundarbans has seen rampant deforestation that has exacerbated soil erosion, leaving large swaths of land vulnerable to water, especially during increasingly frequent cyclones.

For underwater photographers, of course, the Mangroves & Underwater category will be of particular interest, with several DPG photographers being awarded and highly commended. The category winner, Olivier Clement—a DPG Photographer of the Week—along with other category winners: Johannes Panji Christo (Mangroves & People), Mark Ian Cook (Mangroves & Wildlife), Ammar Alsayed Ahmed (Mangroves & Landscapes), Dipayan Bose (Mangroves & Threats), and Giacomo d’Orlando (Mangroves & Conservation Stories).
