The UN Secretary-General hailed ‘strong’ new recommendations to limit the proliferation of small arms
“The proliferation, diversion and misuse of small arms and light weapons continue to undermine peace, security and sustainable development worldwide. – promotes conflict and armed violence, causing enormous loss of life,” António Guterres said in a statement issued by his Spokesperson.

Strengthen cooperation
He also acknowledged the commitments that countries have made to strengthen international cooperation and support and implement gender-responsive policies.
Mr. Guterres “strongly believe that the progress achieved…will help strengthen our collective and national efforts to combat illicit small arms and light weapons until the next review conference in 2030,” the statement continued.
The UN chief added that he hoped commitments on light weapons would support discussions at the conference. Summit of the Future in September “to find forward-looking and action-oriented solutions for a more peaceful future.”
Earlier this month, in a statement to delegates, Mr. Guterres noted that the conference took place at a “difficult and dangerous time for humanity” with new conflicts putting millions of people in danger, where light weapons play a major role.
Leading cause of violent death
According to United Nations data, small arms are the leading cause of violent death and are the weapon of choice in nearly half of all murders globally.
The illegal proliferation of small arms is increasing due to new developments in small arms manufacturing, technology and design – including 3D printing.
