Turkeys are some of the most entertaining animals on the reserve. But few are happy to be seen as everyone’s favorite trio – Echo, Milton and Dino.
Like most male turkeys, these three love to show off. Like their wild, brightly colored ancestors did, these three show off their fur puffs and strutting steps. Wild turkeys use this strategy to attract mates, but Echo, Milton, and Dino will go against anyone!
The boys each have their own unique personalities. While Milton and Echo are bold and friendly with people, Dino is shy. Given Echo’s love of rubbing his butt and his constant need to be the center of attention, you’d think he’s a Golden Retriever.
The birds have one thing in common: they are all love and cherish handling! Every Thanksgiving, Animal Place has an annual tradition of preparing a feast for our turkeys by welcoming them as guests of honor. Cakes of fresh fruit, berries, fall vegetables and more will be served to Dino, Echo, Milton and all their friends.
Life isn’t always fun for our beloved trio. They were legally rescued from a turkey farm that planned to sell them for meat during Thanksgiving. The boys were coughing and sneezing, a sign of respiratory illness. They are smaller than the others. They were wounded by their stressed pack mates.
By narrowly avoiding an untimely death, the friends found safety in a sanctuary.
Now, every November, you’ll spend time strolling the reserve grounds, foraging for insects in the autumn leaves, and enjoying some late-season warmth in patches of sunshine.
Out of concern for people like you who realize that their lives are worth more than a meal, their lives will be like this for many years to come.
That is something to be grateful for.
