The Smart number 5 has broken cover, with the Tesla Model Y-sized electric SUV billed as the brand’s most powerful vehicle to date.
Key specifications of the Smart #5 have been revealed in records of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and announced by the automaker CarNewsChinaand it will join #first And #3 in Smart’s electric vehicle (EV) line.
It’s just a little smaller in comparison Tesla Model Yand in the top guise there’s more power Hyundai Ioniq 5N And Kia EV6 GT.
Number 5 has appeared in conceptual form at this year’s Beijing auto show in April, is billed as the brand’s largest and most rugged vehicle.
Smart #5 product is expected to be officially revealed later this year.
According to MIIT’s filing, the Smart #5 will be available with four powertrain options: two single-motor rear-wheel-drive configurations and two four-motor all-wheel-drive configurations.
CarNewsChina reports that they will use an 800V electrical architecture that will allow charging from 10 to 80% in 15 minutes, while a battery with a capacity of more than 100kWh will be available in the variant with the longest range.
The Smart #5 is capable of a range of up to 700 km on the CLTC cycle used in China.
RWD models will be equipped with a single rear-mounted motor producing 250kW or 267kW, combined with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.
AWD models are equipped with a 165kW front motor and a 267kW or 310kW rear motor. The most powerful of the two has a combined output of 432kW, while the range-topping AWD variant produces 475kW.
They are equipped with a nickel cobalt manganese battery pack.
In its most powerful state, the 5 is expected to be able to hit 0-100km/h in less than three seconds.
By comparison, the Ioniq 5 N produces 448kW, which can be increased to 478kW in 10 seconds with the N Grin Boost function, while the EV6 GT produces 430kW.
Both cars have an acceleration time from 0-100km/h of 3.5 seconds.
The Smart #5 is a five-door, five-seat vehicle and measures 4705 mm long, 1920 mm wide and 1705 mm high – 46 mm shorter, 58 mm narrower and 81 mm taller than the Model Y.
It can be equipped with wheels ranging from 18 to 21 inches, while the top-spec AWD variant has a curb weight of 2450kg.
Interior images have yet to be released, although the production version will likely follow Concept #5 in offering a cabin with thick screens.
Smart would be Return to the Australian market later this year after nearly a decade of absence.
Geely-owned Volvo, Polestar and Lotus already sell electric vehicles here, while the electric-only Zeekr brand is also preparing for a local launch.
The Smart #5’s launch date has yet to be confirmed and it’s unclear whether it will appear Down Under.
Both the Smart #1 and #3 have been confirmed for Australia, including Brabus’s highest-performance version, although local specifications have yet to be revealed.
In China, they offer a single rear-mounted electric motor that produces up to 200kW of power and 343Nm of torque, paired with a 66kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese battery.
Brabus versions add a front electric motor and increase capacity to 315kW and 543Nm.
Smart is currently jointly owned by Geely and Mercedes-Benz, and all of its vehicles are manufactured in Xi’an, China.
