ZDNET Key Points

  • The Nixplay Smart Frame retails for $200 and comes in classic black or black.
  • Easy to set up and you can invite family and friends to add photos to the frame (even if they don’t own a Nixplay).
  • This frame is quite expensive, especially since horizontal shots will be pixelated and cropped.

Remember digital photo frames? They were all the rage in the late 1990s/early 2000s — when both parents and grandparents had to own one. They seem to have waned in popularity, but I’m here to say we should make digital photo frames “come back” again.

I got my hands on a Nixplay Touch 10 Smart Frame and I’m impressed. As a millennial, I take hundreds of photos on my phone but rarely print them out to display at home. While digital photo frames are often associated with older people, I think everyone should give them away — or at least Nixplay Touch 10 Smart Frame — one try.

First impression

The Nixplay Touch 10 Smart Photo Frame comes in black, classic matte, and wood finishes. It’s rated 4.7 out of 5 stars on Amazon and has over 22,000 reviews — so digital photo frames aren’t exactly outdated.

Setting up the photo frame was surprisingly easy. I first downloaded the Nixplay app, connected the photo frame to my home Wi-Fi, and then paired the photo frame with the app. I used the standard free plan with the photo frame, which includes unlimited cloud storage, 5GB of video, and a basic photo editing suite.

You control your photo “playlist” in the app, which is where you can add, rearrange, or delete photos and videos. The app connects to your phone’s media files, or you can upload them using cloud services like Google Photos or Dropbox.

You can also invite friends or family to add photos to your playlist, and they don’t need to own a Nixplay frame. I haven’t invited my friends to add photos yet, but I’ll do so — because I’m sure they have some great photos (including some embarrassing ones of mine).

On the frame, a convenient touch screen allows you to control brightness, auto-off timer, projection time, display mode, activity sensor timer (turns off the frame after a certain period of time without anyone passing by the frame) and notifications.

Forgotten digital memories

Seeing photos that had been sitting on my phone for years in my living room was a wonderful feeling. I got married last October and only printed out six of the 2,000 wedding photos on the day, so seeing our entire wedding album come to life in one frame was incredibly special to me. (I just sat in front of the frame for 20 minutes, reliving the day.)

I also created a playlist of our trips over the years, which is fun to watch. Walking across the frame and glancing at my memories is becoming one of the most anticipated moments of the day. The Nixplay’s 1280 x 800 niX-Spectre HD IPS display is bright, and all my photos (even those taken with my iPhone in 2019) came out vibrant without any annoying pixelation.

Makes a perfect gift

After having the Nixplay Touch 10 Smart Frame in my home, I am officially a fan of digital photo frames. Millennials may not print as many photos as we should, but the Nixplay digital photo frame can help us relive hundreds of memories in a single frame.

The frame normally costs $200, but On Amazon it is selling for $130.So, it is time to try making a digital photo frame yourself or gift it to your loved one.
