The Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid costs less to rent than a non-hybrid model

In California, Jeep is currently offering a 2023 Wrangler 4xe lease for about $100 less per month than one of the comparable non-hybrid Wranglers with a lower sticker price.

Looking at the total effective monthly cost (including cash at signing), the deal was discovered by CarsLive up to $399 a month for 36 months with $4,499 on contract with 4xe in the top-of-the-range Willys, compared to $531 a month for 42 months at $3,995 on a basic Sport Unlimited contract. That equates to an effective monthly cost of $524 for the Wrangler 4xe lease, compared to $626 for the base non-hybrid.

Even more shocking is the difference between those two deals in the actual sticker price: The Wrangler Willys 4xe starts at $56,530, including $1,795 destination, and according to CarsDirect, the rental example applies to a $60,115 SUV. On the other hand, the non-hybrid Unlimited Sport with a higher rent costs only $36,990.

This jarring bargain was made possible not by traditional rental factors — such as a much higher resale value for 4xes — but by taxpayer money, creating an electric vehicle rental loophole that resulted in a direct tax credit to Jeep’s fixed finance arm. Costs in other states may be higher; Jeep clarified that the California deal includes an additional $3,500 incentive.

The majority of behind-the-scenes rental discounts take place through the Commercial Electric Vehicle Tax Credit. While it peaks at 15% of the purchase price for a plug-in hybrid, it will have a maximum value of $7,500 in the calculation no matter which Wrangler 4xe you choose, even considering the lower base price of $51,790 for 2024.

That’s a hole apply US tax dollars to electric vehicles manufactured abroadas Luxury EV costs much more than the established price ceiling for the modified EV tax credit on purchase. Here, however, it is an American-made SUV with a relatively modest price tag.
