The hidden ‘Mask Anything’ tool in Adobe Lightroom

Adobe Lightroom has continued to become more powerful over the years. If you’ve been using Lightroom for a while, you might be surprised at how much it’s grown. Masking is an area where software has improved a lot, including a tool that could be called the Mask Anything tool.

Masking features in Adobe Lightroom continue to improve, allowing photographers to perform more editing tasks solely in Lightroom instead of needing to leverage Adobe Photoshop for more complex tasks. In this video, Mark Denney looks at a masking option, the Select Object tool, which he says Adobe should have called the Mask Anything tool.

Using some example images in the video, Denney demonstrates how using the rectangle or brush selection options can allow you to target very specific areas of the image with a mask to apply only edits to the selection. While the initial selection may need some tweaking, the color subtraction option he shows lets you quickly tweak the mask to only affect the area you want.

As a landscape photographer who does more editing in Lightroom instead of Photoshop, I think I overlooked the power of the Select Object tool in Lightroom. The techniques Denney demonstrates in this video helped me realize how applicable this tool is to my work.
