The government has allocated an additional RM100 million for the maintenance of federal roads in Peninsular Malaysia.

The government has approved an additional RM100 million for road maintenance works across Peninsular Malaysia. According to Deputy Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, the funds will be used for routine maintenance on both paved and unpaved roads.

He said RM70 million would be used for 79 routine road maintenance works, while the remaining RM30 million would be allocated for 200 non-road related routine maintenance works.

“Periodic pavement maintenance works include the repair of damaged road surfaces and structures using techniques such as milling and paving, overlaying, roadway reconstruction and resurfacing. Non-pavement routine maintenance includes the repair of road assets other than road surfaces and structures, such as road markings, bridge maintenance, sewer repairs, road sign and barrier repairs,” he explained.

One-fifth of this total will be provided to the southern region. “For the southern region, which comprises Johor, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, we are providing 18 periodic pavement works worth RM15.06 million and 36 non-pavement works worth RM6.5 million,” he said.

The government has allocated an additional RM100 million for the maintenance of federal roads in Peninsular Malaysia.

Speaking at the Southern Region – Peninsular Malaysia Federal Road Maintenance Programme 2024, Ahmad said Johor received the largest allocation of RM11.75 million, followed by Negeri Sembilan with RM6.645 million and Melaka with RM2.165 million.

From this allocation, Johor will be able to use RM8.05 million for 10 regular asphalt road maintenance works, while Negeri Sembilan is allocated RM5.4 million for six maintenance works and Melaka is allocated RM1.61 million for two maintenance works. Bernama report.

For non-road surface routine maintenance, Johor received RM3.7 million for 36 maintenance works, Negeri Sembilan received RM2.245 million for 11 maintenance works and Melaka received RM555,000 for six maintenance works.

While welcome, the additional allocation will not fix everything and more will certainly be needed in the next budget. Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi had previously said that about RM4 billion is needed annually to maintain all federal roads in the country, but for decades, only about RM1 billion has been allocated annually for this purpose.
