Las Vegas never fails with its energy, frenetic pace, and great themes. Loved teaching a workshop there last week and working with performers who are not only extremely talented but also friends. The life of a photographer. Multiple locations, people in front of your lens, you build many skills to deploy. Got a chance to shoot Desert Dogs while in Vegas. Racquetball is a fast-moving, fun shooting sport, although not an easy one to play. I went to Syracuse University, a longtime lacrosse powerhouse, but haven’t literally shot the sport since college. Have a great evening and take a photo with a hat Candace Ward! She showed me the ropes and places.
The onslaught of temperatures nearing 100 degrees reminded me that when I got home, summer was near. And it will be a summer of adventure! In July, I went to Estonia, to the idyllic, historic island of Saaremaa, in the south of that wonderful country. Teach an accelerated week of light (The interface of light) from July 8-14 with an experienced panel group – Kurssille. We’ll work in castles, beaches, churches, and craters, grappling with all the issues and strategies of portraiture and placement. We will have a great team of models, from dancers, athletes to character actors. link register!
Been in Tallinn only once, and all too short. Estonia is great for its history and elegance. Can’t wait to go back. Especially for this one, it will be a real dive into the art of beauty, fashion, dance and narrative portraiture. We gathered at Kuressaare, dined at the historic Ku-Kuu Restaurant, and discussed goals. Then, the next day, we were immediately immersed in the creative process in front of the camera. Everyone shoots in small groups and there will be examples, lectures, tutorials and lots of time in front of the camera. A really intensive and amazing week ahead.
And then…Africa.
From Estonia, hop straight to Nairobi to witness the magnificence of the natural world in Africa. Haven’t been to Africa in years and can’t wait to go back. There is no other place on the planet like it. Teach with the wonderful Tamara Lackey in two new workshops in a row. ONE Kenya 8 day trip during the main Great Migration season, starting with a private safari at the Maasai Mara Game Reserve and visiting wildlife sanctuaries. For extra rewards, workshop week #2 is one 10 day trip in Kenya and Uganda includes a Gorilla Safari encounter at the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. There is no more beautiful place on earth to see, admire and practice camera skills. Long lens management, timing, light observation, as well as portraiture, lighting strategy, criticism and post-processing – in short, a diverse set of skills a photographer needs to hone hump. Witnessing the series of photos above, photographers don’t just survive on a mere skill set. It is the depth of the knowledge base and the persistence to keep working and pushing that make the difference.
