The dimmer you didn’t know you needed

I have a lot of complements. My studio contains Broncolor Hazylightold slats are as rare as hen’s teeth and softboxes range in size from under a meter to as big as I could stand inside of them, but this latest addition is what has helped.

I’ve never been interested in bodies or lenses, because they don’t interest me that much. However, provide me with an interesting lighting modifier to look at, and I’m done. My two favorite modifiers have always been the Bowens Softlighter and the Broncolor Hazylight. Sadly, both are out of production and haven’t been around for a long time, so I spend a lot of time online trying to find them, as I store them in my studio like a eccentric British photographer that I am.

Before Christmas I bought a couple of old optical stethoscopes to play with and I’m pretty impressed with them, but the old tuners have a few flaws, mostly due to age. Then I picked up a cheap optical lens from PixaPro, also known as Godox around the world. The one I chose comes with a lens (I don’t mind putting high end optics in front of hot model light) and is called Optical Snoot Point Projector with Built-in 85mm Lens Complete Kit. The kit itself is great value for money, although to use it to its full potential you’ll need at least 1,200 watts of light.

In this video, I talk about the pros and cons of this affordable optical stethoscope from Pixapro and give examples of how I’ve used it.
