The barge crashed into the Texas bridge, partially collapsing and sending oil into the water

Galveston Bridge collapsed.

ONE lighter IN Galveston, Texas crashed into the bridge on the morning of May 15, spilling oil into the water, forcing authorities to close it bridge eastern span. Also, it looks like the second section of the railway line runs alongside the bridge has collapsed into the water below with stacked concrete slabs lighter.

Fortunately, it appears no one was injured at the Pelican Island Bridge, according to statement from the city of Galveston. Emergency management officials from Galveston, Texas A&M University at Galveston, state, US Coast Guard and Texas Department of Transportation all respond to incidents.

“The collision resulted in an oil spill in the bay,” the city statement said. “America coastal protection is responding and will determine the extent of the spill and begin the containment and cleanup process.”

The statement also said engineers from Texas DOT are checking the road to determine if there is significant damage. Therefore, the bridge will remain closed until it is determined to be safe.

This news comes less than two months after Key Bridge disaster. To refresh your memory, a giant container ship has collided Francis Scott Main Bridge in Baltimore back in March, knocked it down and killed 6 workers in process.

This is a developing story and Jalopnik will continue to update it as more information becomes available.
