The age limit for taxis on peninsula vehicles and e-bikes nationwide has been increased to 15 years as of January 1, 2023

The Department of Transport has revealed details of the extension of the age limit for taxi and ride-hailing vehicles, which have been increased from 10 to 15 years effective January 1, 2023. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the updated policy will apply to all ride-hailing vehicles nationwide and all taxis in Peninsular Malaysia including taxis regular, airport taxis and luxury taxis.

“With this, the government is allowing vehicles that have expired 10 years ago but are not yet 15 years old to return to service. Along with this announcement, the licensing age limit will be updated to 14 years old. This means that any vehicle that wants to be licensed for taxi and e-hailing purposes must do so at least one year before the 15 age limit,” he said.

Loke said the implementation of the new 15-year-old policy is intended to ease the burden many taxi and ride-hailing drivers face, especially those who have been hit hard during the Covid-19 pandemic. “If the driving age remains the same at 10 years, many drivers have to bear huge costs to buy a new car and risk falling into debt even though their income is still precarious,” he said.

He added that the extension is conditional. “I want to emphasize that the use of taxis and motorbike taxis must always be periodically inspected to ensure that only vehicles that meet technical and safety requirements are allowed to circulate on the road,” he explained. .

As for the age restrictions for taxis in Sabah, WP Labuan and Sarawak, the current policy of the commercial vehicle licensing board (LPKP) Sabah and LPKP Sarawak will continue to apply, with a change in policy The book only increases the policy for ride-hailing vehicles. Currently, the age limit for taxis in these states is between 15 and 30 years old.

Loke said the road public transport agency (APAD), LPKP Sabah and LPKP Sarawak will make further announcements on the date when it is possible to apply for permission from taxi operators and call car and drivers to the counter to licensing and license renewal.
