KTM 990 RC R: Purpose

Over the past fifteen years, KTM has introduced sports-oriented road products to the public at a time when the company was expanding its off-road racing capabilities to asphalt: the KTM RC8, KTM RC 390 and the limited edition , for racing only. KTM RC 8C are typical examples.

During that time, KTM has merged its R&D, learning and racing achievements at a rapid pace. The company now caters to motorcyclists looking for a machine born from competition but designed to be the ultimate, cutting-edge street tool. The search to minimize the difficult compromises brought about by ergonomics and overly sporty handling is over. The 990 RC R has been in production for many years and there is a wealth of data collected from titles and trophies in almost every different MotoGP category. The bike represents a natural evolution of the existing KTM RC range, yet its sporting potential allows for an easy conversion into the 990 RC R TRACK version. True to the READY TO RACE ethos, this version is expected to launch in Q2 2025.

The street-homologed 990 RC R boasts the LC8c engine, honed to produce powerful torque and horsepower, pumped out through condensed stainless steel mufflers and built according to new ergonomics and is equipped via a reversible gear lever for shifting as standard.

The steel frame has been designed for dynamic performance, with weight increased towards the front end. It has a dedicated 25-degree steering head angle and offset to enhance steering response. Increased stiffness provides a consistent feel and stability when accelerating on bumpy roads or on the track while maintaining agility, especially at low speeds. The cast aluminum subframe contributes to driving feel.

Ergonomics are key to the performance of the 990 RC R. Stretched testing has prepared six contact points on the tank for better connection, tilted and ‘tucked in’ to ensure comfort but also support for knees, arms and reduces pressure on hands. The new fuel tank has been configured as the main part of the Ergo. Adjustable footrests also play an important role, as do the fully adjustable WP APEX Open Cartridge Suspension and lightweight cast aluminum wheels wrapped in Michelin tires.

The MotoGP heritage is evident with wind-tunnel perforated aerodynamic wings providing braking and cornering stability as well as other edges and contouring around the bodywork that scream ‘racer’.

If there was any lingering doubt about the bike’s intended use, the minimal modifications required to move up to the KTM 990 RC R TRACK version will certainly cement its racing pedigree. Built by KTM at their Austrian factory, these modifications strip away the road-legal essentials, incorporate fairings, refine the adjustments, further customize and Modified racing bodywork, including full exhaust system. These modifications ensure that riders focus on lap times rather than leisurely rides. Additionally, ease of repair, low maintenance requirements and extensive official dealer support provide further benefits.

KTM 990 RC R: Promise

“The KTM 990 RC R is a groundbreaking innovation for those who live for the thrill of cornering. It’s for people who stick close to the road, almost touching their knees and then going over the limit, pulling their elbows down to the road on the track. This bike offers power and prestige without the exorbitant price tag. Finally, we can launch the KTM 990 RC R and introduce a truly special motorcycle to dealers in early 2025, meeting the expectations of countless riders and track enthusiasts. . Our Duke range and other high street products have attracted a loyal following due to their distinctive character; we believe the KTM 990 RC R will quickly achieve cult status because it excels at two purposes for which it was designed so well. Success will be evident on the track, but a great customer experience on the road will really make the difference.” – Riaan Neveling, KTM Global Marketing Director
