The 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid achieves the same fuel economy as the Prius

  • The 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid will be priced at $29,845 when it goes on sale on June 19.

  • The 2025 Civic Hybrid is expected to have EPA fuel economy ratings of 50 mpg city, 47 highway and 49 combined

Buyers looking for great fuel economy no longer need to buy one Toyota Priusand there is certainly no need to settle for one Hybrid corolla.

While the latest Prius is quite attractive Honda Civic Hybrid 2025 gets the 50 mpg mark in a discreet package that doesn’t scream, “I have a hybrid.” When it arrives in dealerships on June 19, priced at $29,845 including a $1,095 destination charge, the Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid will top the Civic lineup. The hybrid hatchback won’t arrive until later this summer with pricing to be announced in the future.

Here’s what you need to know after Green Car Reports spent a morning driving a 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid prototype around Montreal.

The Civic Hybrid operates like an electric car, sort of

The Civic Hybrid uses a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine on the Atkinson cycle, as part of Honda’s two-motor hybrid system, for a combined system output of 220 horsepower and maximum torque. 232 lb-ft. One of the electric motors is for propulsion and is always connected to the wheels, and it is connected to the gasoline engine through the clutch, while the other is connected to the main engine under the generator form. The propulsion motor powers the drive wheels most of the time, and it grips the gasoline engine during some gentle highway cruising conditions for maximum efficiency.

Power is always sent to the front wheels and unlike the Toyota Corolla’s hybrid all-wheel drive system, this is not an option.

Around town, from traffic light to traffic light, the Honda Civic’s gas engine barely starts and when it does it’s very quiet and quiet. “To some extent, when moving along, the system mimics a BEV,” a Honda spokesman said. He wasn’t wrong, except that the gas engine blew up.

With the electric motor’s instant torque delivery, the Civic takes on the track like no other Civic has before except those wearing Si or Type R badges. Merging onto the highway is no problem. What matters and the Hybrid accelerates with the same pedestrian agility that the Civic previously lacked.

Honda has given the Hybrid four levels of regenerative braking, controlled via steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The system defaults to Level 1, which feels like regular engine braking, and each level progresses from there. My prototype will not participate in different regen levels. Based on how Honda configures the CR-V Hybrid and Accord Hybrid, these models will be able to achieve the same level of regenerative power you find in battery electric vehicles.

Four driving modes change the Civic Hybrid’s personality with a toggle switch on the center console. The default Normal mode provides a good balance of power, but the throttle application can be a bit sensitive if you’re carrying passengers prone to motion sickness. Switching to Econ mode takes the throttle off a bit and everything goes smoothly. Sport mode adjusts the throttle mapping to 8, as this isn’t an Si or Type R, and really helps the Hybrid move off the road or in traffic. Individual modes can customize throttle response, synthesized engine sounds, and gauge cluster design. Eco and Normal will be remembered by key cycle, but turning the car off in Sport mode will see the car default back to Normal mode when restarted.

Honda has upgraded all Civics for 2025 with revised spring and damper tuning, reinforced front upper suspension mounts and stiffer sliding front subframe mounts and lower suspension mounts. The changes have made the already impressive ride and handling even more refined. On cobblestone roads at speeds faster than the average driver should drive, the Civic is controlled and composed beyond its price point.

Civic Hybrid mpg: Outstanding in fuel economy

Honda says Civic Hybrid Fuel economy ratings Registered at 50 mpg city, 47 and 49 highway combined. These compare favorably with the base Civic, which now uses the Hybrid’s 2.0-liter engine without an electric motor, achieving speeds of up to 32/41/36.

During my all-too-brief period of mixed driving, which included time spent sitting in a parking lot taking photos (which reduced average fuel economy), I found the average consumption indicated to be 42.9 mpg over 38 miles, according to a vehicle with less than 500 miles on the odometer.

The Civic Hybrid seems light

It would take a lot to realize the Civic Hybrid is hiding a hybrid powertrain, and that’s the point. Civic Hybrid Sport and Sport Touring models top the lineup, ahead of base LX and Sport models. The hybrid cars have no visual highlights, other than a small hybrid badge on the trunk lid, black side mirrors, body-colored grille surround and front spoiler, window and door trim. Black suction. The finishing touch is hybrid-specific 18-inch aluminum wheels.

Citizen interface, interior space

Anyone who has sat in a Civic recently will feel right at home. The Civic Hybrid impresses as a known quantity and hasn’t changed much, which is good because the Civic is a better place to spend one’s time than the Corolla by a wide margin. From the honeycomb vents to the satisfying click of the round knobs and climate control knobs, this is an easy-to-use and visually appealing interior. Every Civic features a 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster and a 7.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. My loaded Sport Touring model at $32,845 was swapped for a larger 10.0-inch digital gauge cluster and a 9.0-inch touchscreen with built-in Google services.

The interior is comfortable, quiet and most importantly, well packaged. At 5-foot-10, I could sit comfortably in the back with the front seat adjusted to suit me. Getting in and out of the Civic, whether front or rear, is easier than the Toyota Prius and its steep A-pillars, which can hit you in the head.

The Civic Hybrid makes sense

The Civic Hybrid costs $4,500 more than the base LX model and $2,500 more than the non-hybrid Sport model, but it delivers superior power for a quieter, more powerful and enjoyable driving experience. more — and it will pay for itself in gas savings in just a few years. It’s essentially the same price as the Prius in a more practical package.

The Civic Hybrid costs $5,000 more than the Toyota Corolla Hybrid, but its interior and powertrain give it a more upscale feel than what’s found in the Toyota.

With the return of hybrid cars, the best Civic today is the most fuel-efficient, quietest and most practical car. It’s a normal car thrown together, and for that reason alone it makes sense.

Honda paid for the travel expenses and I got very little sleep to bring you this first-hand review
