Tesla’s plans to go back in time approved for Los Angeles

Elon Musk teased in 2021 he was planning a Tesla Supercharger hub with a 1950s-style diner and drive-in movie theatre in Santa Monica.

Fast forward to today, and Tesla has officially received permit approval for the site.

Teslarati reported that permit approval for the 32 superchargers, two screens and restaurant with rooftop seating came through on July 18, 2023.

Based on Mr Musk’s original Tweet, the two screens will have small clips from movies playing while people visit the Superchargers. This could be to encourage Tesla owners to move on after their vehicles are fully charged.

The outlet reports the plan was originally filed with the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety in November 2022.

According to the permit application, the site will be located at 7001 W. Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood.

The application documents show the proposed floor plan for the new site, however Tesla is yet to officially release any renders. The documents suggest the restaurant will be 488 square metres.

Teslarati reports the restaurant could offer various food choices and will allow visitors to dine both al fresco on the open plan rooftop, or inside the building.

X (formally known as Twitter) user Ed Howard, who doesn’t appear to be affiliated with Tesla, posted renders based on the floor plan from the permit documents.

It’s unclear will construction will begin or when the site will officially open.
