Tesla slashes car prices worldwide after chaotic week : NPR

Tesla slashed the prices of its electric vehicles in the United States, China and other countries, comparing them on its websites late Friday and over the weekend.
In the US, the company has reduced the starting price of the Model X, Model Y and Model S by $2,000, a reduction of less than 5% for the most affordable model. Model 3 and Cybertruck prices remain the same.
In China, Tesla has slashed the price of all models on sale there by 14,000 yuan, or just over 5% for the most affordable model. China is Tesla’s largest market outside the United States and accounts for more than a fifth of the company’s revenue, according to company reports. Latest annual report.
The company also lowered the starting price of most cars in Germany. A Tesla spokesperson told Guardian And Reuters that there have been price drops in many other countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
The news comes as Tesla delivered fewer vehicles in the last quarter compared to the same period a year ago – something that hasn’t happened in four years. The company is expected to announce first-quarter earnings next Tuesday. In the past, its owner, Elon Musk, has talked up competition, especially more affordable electric car models made by Chinese companies.
Tesla announced a recall for the Cybertruck on Friday due to safety issues related to its accelerator pedal. Electric vehicle manufacturer Lay off 10% of employees on Tuesday. The company’s stock price has fallen back to where it was a year ago.
