Supercar maker sells EV division to focus on gasoline-powered V-12 engines

The future trend of electric vehicles is changing, from mainstream automakers to specialized supercar companies.

In Monday, Car Citing comments from Phil Lee, CEO of Gordon Murray Group (GMG), revealed the company sold its EV division last year.

The division, called Gordon Murray Technology, is part of the larger Gordon Murray Group, which includes the Gordon Murray Automotive business and the Gordon Murray Advanced Engineering development and engineering business. Gordon Murray, the designer responsible for the McLaren F1 and founder of GMG, serves as executive chairman and remains involved in the businesses.

Lee said Gordon Murray Technology’s EV division is sold to CYVN Holdings investment group. The Abu Dhabi government is affiliated with CYVN Holdings, which is also one of the leading investors in Chinese automaker Nio.

Gordon Murray Technology is Established in 2022. This department has announced the development of two electric SUVsOne of them will be sold by Gordon Murray Automotive. The status of the two electric SUVs is unknown.

Lee wouldn’t disclose how many Gordon Murray Technology has sold, but noted that the sales have helped the group focus and have money to continue developing V-12-powered supercars.

According to Lee, the automaker will eventually switch to hybrids to keep the V-12 running as long as possible. But the hybridization will be “intelligent” instead of a more conventional design with a large battery system, either in series or parallel.

Current law sets a deadline of 2040 in the US, 2035 in Europe and 2030 in the UK before automakers need to adopt hybrid technology. Lee said the group would lobby to protect low-volume vehicles from the regulations.
