Hi! I’m one of the developers who created Unpacking, a game about taking someone’s items out of a box and learning about that person’s life in the process. People often describe games as feeling very personal, and we think so, but individuals can have different meanings.
The items are personal to our protagonist and allow you to learn about her and watch her develop over the course of the game. Items often have a personal connection to you, the player, as you encounter things that remind you of your own life or those you know. And the items are personal to us, the developers, because part of creating this game involved drawing on our own experiences and finding ways to add small details to those. where we can.
Alarm clock
The cool thing about this alarm clock is that it stays blank until you find a valid slot for it, after which it flashes “12:00”. If you interact with the watch, you can set the time, which is the time in the display — you’ll see it change with the light outside the window when you unpack the rest of the boxes.
If you move the watch again, the screen will go blank, then go back to flashing “12:00” when you put it down. Alarm clocks like these usually use backup batteries so they don’t lose time during a brief power outage, but I had one when I was a kid and forgot to put the battery in it, so it works like like the clock in the game. Realism!
Plush dragon toy
When I was seventeen, I thought it would be a good idea to start a webcomic about a bunch of baby dragons living in a forest. It’s been running for over five years and two thousand comic strips. Even though it never became particularly popular and it’s no longer online, the characters are still near and dear to my heart, so having one of the main characters appear in Unpacking in plush toy form means a lot!
But how fast is the tree?
This set of crayons in a tin tray appears alongside other art supplies, books, and evidence of the protagonist’s ever-blooming pursuit of the visual arts, but to me they are a reminder about a similar set of crayons that I received as a child.
I don’t remember the exact age I received them, I just remember they were my treasures and labeled something like “professional artist pencils” or something grandiose that made me feel like I was. ordered crayons for the children. I. I’m in the big leagues right now!
Climbing shoes and chalk bags
A while ago, a friend introduced me to the game of cobblestone, and I found indoor climbing really fun and enjoyable until I got injured! Still, I think it’s a great hobby that Unpacking’s protagonist picked up on while she was studying, and it lends itself to some special supplies — hiking boots and chalk bags. They’re especially great because they’re easy to spot to people who know what they are but end up feeling like mysterious oddities to others.
Desktop with CRT . monitor
The decompression started in 1997 and moves continuously over time, so you can catch great moments like this level set in 2004 complete with a suitable computer for the time. period. Join us on a journey into the distant past, where people still used cathode ray monitors but weren’t a classic game enthusiast, and bought and used animal mouse pads taste. Marvel at the sound of PC fans whirling and thrill when you receive instant messages from your friends.
So those are just some of the items that have special meaning to me personally. I’m just one member of the team, though, and we’ve found a way to add some of our own to the game we’ve made.
We wanted an authentic experience because we thought that would be the best way to engage you in the story we wanted to tell. There are a lot of details and connections throughout the game, and we hope you enjoy experiencing them for yourself when our game launches on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on May 10.
