Stage collapses at campaign rally in Mexico, killing at least four people

A stage in northern Mexico where a presidential candidate was campaigning collapsed after strong winds blew through the area on Wednesday night, killing at least five people and killing at least 50 people. Another person was injured, a state governor said.

The stage collapsed on the outskirts of Monterrey, Nuevo León state, during an event attended by progressive candidate Jorge Álvarez Mãnez and other members of the Civic Movement party. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico said the cause of the collapse was strong winds social media.

Samuel García, governor of Nuevo León, announced the number of dead and injured in a press conference. He said he was waiting for national authorities to provide more information.

The stage was set up on a baseball field in the city of San Pedro Garza García, which was the location of one campaign event for the Citizens’ Movement Party candidate for city mayor, Lorenia Canavati.

Mr. Álvarez Maynez said on social networks that he was “fine” after the collapse and that he had contacted state authorities to determine what happened.

Mr. García said in a video message that people should take shelter after the storm.

“We are seeing electrical storms. Expect very strong winds and heavy rain in the next two hours,” he said. “There has been a tragedy.”

This is an evolving story.
