Democrat Stacey Abrams announced Wednesday that she will run for governor of Georgia in 2022, setting the stage for a possible rematch with the current governor, Republican Brian Kemp, who nearly beat Abrams in 2018.

Her entry into the contest has always drawn political attention to Georgia, which has emerged as one of the most competitive and closely watched states in the nation.

Abrams, a former Democratic leader in the Georgia House of Representatives who has emerged as a major suffrage advocate on the national stage, has been a standout in the 2018 race, for some, represents a possible future for the Democratic Party.
