Democrat Stacey Abrams announced Wednesday that she will run for governor of Georgia in 2022, setting the stage for a possible rematch with the current governor, Republican Brian Kemp, who nearly beat Abrams in 2018.
Her entry into the contest has always drawn political attention to Georgia, which has emerged as one of the most competitive and closely watched states in the nation.
Abrams, a former Democratic leader in the Georgia House of Representatives who has emerged as a major suffrage advocate on the national stage, has been a standout in the 2018 race, for some, represents a possible future for the Democratic Party.
Abrams ultimately lost that election to Kemp by just 1.4 percentage points — the closest race for Georgia state dominance in decades, according to the report. Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Despite his country record, Abrams focuses on Georgia in One video announce her candidacy.
“I’m running for Governor because opportunities in our state should not be determined by zip code, background, or access,” Abrams wrote on Twitter.
Kemp will have to get a GOP nomination again. He has drawn the ire of former President Donald Trump for failing to help overturn the 2020 presidential election in the state, and pro-Trump Republicans have lined up to challenge Kemp.
Kemp wrote on Twitter, after Abrams announced her bid. “I’m in the fight against Stacey Abrams, Biden’s failed agenda, and their allies have awakened to keep Georgia the best place to live, work, and raise a family. “
If successful, Abrams would be the first black governor in Georgia history and the first black female governor in the nation.
