The show, filmed at Media City in Salford, will celebrate 12 months of incredible sporting action, including the Olympics and Paralympics.

Other awards to be announced include Young Sports Personality of the Year, Team and Coach of the Year, World Sports Star of the Year, Lifetime Achievements, and Silent Heroes.

Who is the Sports Personality candidate?

Tom Daley

At her fourth Olympics, Daley eventually became Olympic diving champion, alongside Matty Lee in the synchronized 10m platform event.

A well-known name since competing on the world stage as a schoolboy, the public has watched as he won major titles, shared the pain of losing his father to cancer, and joy when he got married and later became a father.

Then at the age of 27 and 13 years after his Olympic debut, he earned an emotional victory at the Olympics in Tokyo.

Daley also won bronze in the men’s 10m to become the first British diver to win four Olympic medals.

rowTyson Fury

Unbeaten Fury clinched a thrilling 11th round win over American Deontay Wilder to retain his WBC belt in Las Vegas in October.

He knocked himself out twice in the fourth round before knocking out Wilder in a brutal contest to become world champion.

It confirms Fury’s status as one of the great heavyweights and as the dominant force in the trio against Wilder, with the first fight in 2018 ending in a controversial draw, before when the British boxer won for the second time in 2020.

The champion’s father John later revealed Fury had undergone surgery on both elbows after sustaining a serious injury ahead of his second win over Wilder.

rowAdam Peaty

Peaty once again made her name in the history books when she won gold in the 100m breaststroke in Tokyo to become the first British swimmer to defend an Olympic title.

England blew away the competition to win Britain’s first gold medal at the Olympics.

It left Peaty with the fastest 16 – this race the fifth fastest – on the distance in history, and he remains the only swimmer to sink under 57 seconds with his 2019 world record.

He also played a key role in the UK’s historic 4x100m medley relay victory and silver medal in the men’s middle relay.

rowEmma Raducanu

The 44-year wait for a British Grand Slam women’s singles champion ended with Raducanu’s remarkable feat of winning the US Open.

She was in the first qualifying round in the Open Era to claim the Grand Slam title, winning the match with a straight set win over Canadian Leylah Fernandez.

Raducanu, then 18, didn’t drop a set in the tournament as she became the youngest women’s Slam champion since Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon at the age of 17 in 2004.

In the summer, while awaiting her A results, the youngster emerged as a star at Wimbledon, defying a 338th to reach the fourth round before retiring from the round of 16 after having difficulty breathing.

rowRaheem Sterling

Sterling shone as England advanced to Euro 2020 – reaching the final of a major tournament for the first time in 55 years before losing to Italy on penalties.

The Manchester City forward has scored three times at the tournament, including the opener in England’s historic win over Germany in the last 16.

Sterling is one of three England players, along with defenders Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker, selected for the tournament’s Uefa team.

He also scored 10 Premier League goals in the 2020-21 season as City won the title for the third time in a fourth year.

rowSarah Storey

A 17th Paralympic gold medal has made Storey the UK’s most successful Paralympic athlete of all time.

In Tokyo, Storey defended the women’s C4-5 track title she has held since London 2012 to take a gold against previous record holder Mike Kenny.

Storey’s gold is her third time competing in the Tokyo Paralympics – her eighth Olympics since making her debut in Barcelona in 1992 as a 14-year-old swimmer.

She also won the individual track event before taking the time-tested gold medal bringing her total Paralympic medal count to 28.
