Sorry, CNN, Great Barrier Reef Is Setting Records, Fearmongering Won’t Work – Would You Stand Out for That?

A new report from the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) shows that the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) has set new records for levels this year. Sadly, in a story titled, “Parts of Great Barrier Reef record highest coral count in 36 years” CNN tried to turn this good news in the headlines into a cautionary climate story.

According to the AIMS annual report, the northern and central regions of the 2,300 km GBR ecosystem have the most corals since surveys began 36 years ago. As CNN notes, the AIMS survey of 87 sections of the GBR showed that from August 2021 to May 2022, the mean cover of hard coral in the upper and central areas of the reef was increased by about 1/3. AIMS CEO Dr. Paul Hardisty told CNN that the report suggests the GBR can “recover from mass bleaching and outbreaks of coral-eating spiny starfish.”

One can be forgiven for missing this good news since CNN spend only a few paragraphs discussing the extension of the GBR. More than two-thirds of them CNNThe story is about the threat posed to the GBR from recent purported bleaching events due to climate change. CNNThe story largely ignores the fact that most of the coral colonies of the GBR affected by bleaching have recovered, as AIMS documents report.

In one press release from the Global Warming Policy Fund (GWPF) commenting on the AIMS report, PhD Director, Benny Peiser, said, “This is just the latest example of how empirical data makes a mockery of the catastrophes. How long do they think they can get away with it? “

The GWPF recently released a study discussing positive health of coral reefs in generalPeter Ridd, Ph.D., a longtime researcher on the GBR and coral reefs.

“In recent years, media around the world have reported on increasingly apocalyptic coral bleaching events,” Ridd said in a GWPF press release. “This data proves that they are simply intimidating.”

AIMS Annual Survey Confirms Previous Posts Climate realism showed, coral in GBR and around the world to be more adaptable than climate alarmists claim.

Evidence shows that, in contrast to CNNFear, climate change does not threaten to degrade the GBR or other coral reefs around the world. It’s something people across the globe can be grateful for.
