Sony a7 IV studio scene: 33MP sensor offers great detail but lags at high ISOs: Digital photography review

We’ve just released studio footage for the Sony a7 IV, providing a chance to see how its new 33MP BSI CMOS sensor compares to both its predecessor and its peers.

Ours The test scene is designed for simulation variety of textures, colors, and textures you’ll encounter in the real world. It also has two lighting modes to see the effect of different lighting conditions.

The first thing to be clear is that the a7 IV’s 33MP sensor can capture a lot of detail, and as we’ve seen in our actual samples, Color JPEG can be compared directly with the best of the same industry. The higher pixel count, combined with Sony’s JPEG sharpness makes fine details than its rivals. Moire appeared, but it’s not overwhelming, which indicates an anti-aliasing filter, but probably not a particularly active one.

As we expected, smaller pixels mean more noise if you view the image in full pixel resolution, but this difference is completely ruled out if you look at the picture scaled to the same size. Push to higher ISO and noise levels start climbing, surpassing that of its direct rivals.

However, this additional noise cannot be blamed solely on the number of pixels, as it is a fraction louder than some higher resolution peer. Overall, this is a good, but not groundbreaking, performance, with the ability to capture detail seem to be the strong point of the a7 IV.
