CBS news report that Philadelphia thieves broke into a trailer and stole at least $100,000 in coins. The truck was reportedly headed to Florida and was carrying $750,000 from the Mint in Philadelphia. However, authorities do not believe the theft was targeted. “There was a lot of cargo theft here and there in Northeast Philly and South Philadelphia in the following months where we took lamb, chicken, TVs, refrigerators, etc., alcohol,” said Captain John Ryan. You wouldn’t think thieves would leave $650,000 behind, but since they stole the coins it makes sense. At the very least, a million coins would weigh about 5,000 lbs, so transporting them would be difficult. That’s more than the tonnage of many pickup trucks.
