Slowthai apologizes after Nazi swastika anti-fascist t-shirt was misinterpreted at Canadian carnival | News about Ant-Man & Art

British rapper slowthai has apologized after the crowd misinterpreted the anti-fascist t-shirt with the swastika and the word “destroy” he was wearing.

Musician whose real name is Tyron Frampton has received much criticism online after appearing on stage in costume at the Osheaga music festival in Montreal, Canada.

In a statement released on Twitter, slowthai, 27, admitted the message he was trying to portray the Nazi symbol had been confused with.

“I apologize to anyone offended by me wearing an anti-fascist/anti-regime t-shirt and the use of the symbolism it represents,” he said. “I want you to know that I stand firmly against anti-Semitism and fascism in any form, which the T-shirt illustrates with the word ‘destroy’ above the logo.”

Twitter user Neil Orlowsky shared images of slowthai on stage, writing: “His manager, festival organizer or stage manager walks in and says this hate symbol has no place standing at the carnival, in Quebec, or in Canada?”

Slowthai’s apology came after the festival released a statement, saying: “A performer appeared on stage on Saturday wearing a controversial t-shirt featuring a swastika print that caused the swastika The t-shirt denounces the regime.

“We sincerely apologize to anyone who may have misunderstood this message and felt hurt.”

One Twitter user reacted: “Absolutely horrible reaction. He should never have been on stage wearing that shirt. Everyone knows the swastika stands for post-World War II. Everyone joins in. this should feel shame.”

However, some users pointed out that similar t-shirts have been worn by rock stars in the past.

This is not the first time slowthai has caused controversy.

In 2019, he holds a effigy of Boris Johnson’s head on stage at the end of his performance at the Mercury Awards.

In 2020, he apologized to comedian and host Katherine Ryan for his “shameful act” at that year’s NME Awards, where he was accused of making “lewd comments” and then throwing his drink into the crowd.

Sky News has reached out to representatives of slowthai for comment.
