Ski resorts will open in the summer – here’s how to score

As April approaches, you might assume it’s time to hang up your skateboards for the season. However, with record snowfall this year, many mountains are dragging on this season — and it’s no joke April Fools’ skiing will continue into the summer.

If you’ve ever wanted to pass spring (or even summer) to ski off your to-do list, 2023 is the year.

With plenty of snow and more on the way, the Sierras, Wasatch and Northern Rockies can take you skiing all summer. For example, Brighton gets over 740 inches and Mammoth gets over 800 inches, meaning major resorts in the western US are poised to offer great skiing for months to come.

And believe it or not, many mountains will even let you ski for free for the rest of the season with purchase. Next year pass the season.

So, before you say goodbye to winter, start considering your next ski trip — with some great deals and snow.

The resorts are extending the ski season

Palisades Tahoe, California

The Palisades Tahoe is about to pass 700 inches of snowfall on the Upper Mountains, far more than its usual 400 inches seasonally. With that amount of snow, the season has lasted until July 4 — although the Palisades slopes will close in June; only Alpine will remain open.

Because the Palisades Tahoe is part of Ikon . Ski Passyou can use next season pass 2023-2024 to ski for free this spring, starting April 10, 2023. You read that correctly: With Next ski pass of the year, you can ski in the spring or summer of 2023 at no extra charge.

If you don’t want to buy tickets now, you can buy discounted tickets for the rest of the season. You can buy three packs for just $143. Use all the tickets for yourself or even share them with friends. Skiing for less than $50 a day is a bargain in the ski industry, especially at a top resort.

Mammoth Mountain, California

Want to ski in your bathing suit? Mammoth Mountain will be open until the end of July. With historic snowfall, Mammoth could be the place to go skiing this summer. The resort currently has 702 inches of snow at the main lodge and 879 inches at the top. And, of course, more snow is forecast.

Similar to the Palisades Tahoe, Ikon Ski Pass holders 2023-2024 can ski for free this spring and summer, starting April 10, 2023.

Snowbird, Utah

At the time of writing, Snowbird has seen a drop of 719 inches – a record amount about four times larger than the amount many of the larger resorts in the Northeast have received over the entire season. The resort recently announced Memorial Day closure dates and will assess conditions in May to see if a further extension can be made. This means you can ski and cycle daily through May 14 and then on weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) at least until the end of the month.

Snowbird will also start selling tickets for the 2023-2024 season on April 13, including this year’s spring access for free. Although the mountain is also part of the Ikon Ski Pass, the resort is not included in the free spring skiing benefit.

However, the resort is offering a “Spring Ski & Stay” special. If you book accommodation for two nights or more, you will receive a daily lift ticket per adult. Children 12 and under can also ski for free in this package.

Arapahoe Basin, Colorado

Like the first resort in Colorado to open for the 2023–2024 ski seasonIt will most likely also be the last store to close in the state.

The resort has seen 205 inches of snowfall this winter. Based on monthly averages, there’s a good chance there will be another 70 inches of decline over the next two months. With no end date set, the mountain will likely be open at least until early June. For the past two years, the resort has closed on June 5 and June 6 respectively, so it’s a pretty good bet that A-Basin will host skiing in the summer.

A-Basin is part of the Ikon Ski Pass. However, next year’s ticket does not allow visitors to enter the resort in the spring and summer. However, this resort is sold out, so make sure you buy advance ticket if you plan to ski in the coming weeks.

bottom line

With 89 days together, this ski family has yet to say goodbye to winter. JENNIFER YELLIN/THE POINT

Don’t put your skis away and kiss the snow goodbye right away.

This is one of the most epic winters in the West. Although I’m an East Coast skier with about 20 days of skiing this season, with so many mountains in the West extending their seasons, a last trip might be on the cards.
