Swain and five other stallions supported by downsizing Shadwell have been donated to Old Friends Thoroughbred retirement farm, Old Friends announced in a release March 22.
Albertus Maximus , Kayrawan , Intidab , Mustanfar , Dumaani and Swain were moved in recent weeks from Shadwell’s Nashwan Stud complex to the Georgetown, Ky. nonprofit’s ranch, along with 143 of its other residents, including the Kentucky Derby winner (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1) in 1997 and Belmont The Stakes Winners (G1) were Birdstone, Touch Gold and Sarava.
Following the death of its founder, Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in March 2021, Shadwell conducted a reorganization of operations in both the United States and Europe. This restructuring involved the relocation of a number of stallions and the sale of a significant number of the herd and breed. Several parts of its ranch in Kentucky have also entered the real estate market.
Old Friends Chairman and Founder Michael Blowen said: “We are very proud and privileged that Shadwell has entrusted us with their wonderful stallions. “Their support, both financially and in their appreciation of the farm, speaks volumes about their generosity. We accept it as a huge tribute to the great philanthropist. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum and his irreplaceable legacy of purebred breeding and racing.”
Kayrawan at the mature retirement farm for old friends
The new residents are:
Albertus Maximus, 18 years old, son of Retired Old Friend Albert the Great. Winner of the 2009 Handicap (G1) and 2008 Dirters’ Cup (G1) Handicap, he retired from horse riding duty in 2012.
Kayrawan (Mr. Pros Inspector), 30 years old, received Tom Fool Handicap in 1996 (G2). He picked out 52 winners, including the Dubai bet winner Sheikh and four runners who placed the bet.
Intidab (Phone Trick), 29 years old, placed bets in the UK and Dubai before heading to the US where he won the classification in the Phenomenal Handicap 2000 A (G2) and True North Handicap 2000 (G2).
Mustanfar (Unbridled), 29, earns $625,010 by winning or placing in nine classified stakes while racing on dirt, turf and synthetic surfaces. He won the Sycamore Breeders Cup in 2004 (G3T) and the Lexington Stakes (G3) in 2004, and has now picked winners on both grass and field.
Dumaani (Danzig), 31, scored after a landslide victory in the Keeneland Breeders’ Cup Mile (G3T) 1995-96, a race that Shadwell then sponsored for years that rose to the top.
Swain (Nashwan), 30, became group 1 champion in England and Ireland, and finished third in two Breeders ‘Cups: the 1996 Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1T) and the 1998 Breeder Cup Classic ( G1). In a memorable renewal of the second race, he’s come a long way, trailing only Awesome Again and Silver Charm.
Kayrawan, Intidab, Mustanfar and Dumaani are a hybrid of Shadwell.
