<p>The Land Transport Authority (JPJ) will take enforcement action against Singaporean drivers with unpaid traffic fines in Malaysia from 1 January 2025, according to a report by <em><a href=Straits TimesSingaporeans received more than 35,000 summonses from 1990 to June 2024, amounting to RM3.5 million.

While no action has been taken against the drivers so far, they are being urged to pay the fines as Malaysia prepares to implement the Vehicle Entry Permit System (VEP) on October 1 this year. The VEP acts as an “identification card” for vehicles entering Malaysia and will allow authorities to track traffic violations.

Singaporean drivers entering the two Johor checkpoints at the Sultan Iskandar Complex via the Causeway as well as the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex via the Second Link must have a VEP. Without one, they may be refused entry into Johor or fined up to RM2,000. The VEP system uses RFID tags issued by the Land Transport Department of Malaysia (JPJ) and costs RM10 per tag.

Resolving outstanding traffic summonses can be done via MyBayar PDRM or MyEG, and foreigners can use their passport numbers to create accounts on these portals. A JPJ spokesperson said that after the VEP system is implemented from Oct 1, all foreign drivers should settle their fines before leaving Malaysia.

Enforcement will be phased in, with foreign vehicles with outstanding fines still allowed to enter and exit Malaysia from October 1 to December 31. However, full enforcement will be implemented from January 1, 2025.
