Where is Shetland?

The Shetland Sheepdog was developed on Shetland Island, located where Scotland meets Scandinavia and the Atlantic Ocean meets the North Sea. As you’ll see, the name is a combination of Scots and Scandinavian combined with words related to the islands’ long history. In the ninth century, Norway began to colonize these islands, a legacy that left many landmarks behind. In 1469, the islands were assigned to Scotland as a means by which the king of Norway could settle a dowry for his daughter’s marriage to the Scottish crown.
