Service dog traveled from Oregon to Texas after its human suddenly passed away

Cami, a spiritual support dog, has had a tumultuous week after her human suddenly passed away. She stayed with him until he took his last breath, but then she was taken to an animal shelter in Oregon. The other members of Cami’s family are in Texas, and there’s no way she’d go that far to be with them.

But fortunately, an animal rescue had a dog transport from Texas to Cami’s location. So they kindly offered to go out and get her toward familiar faces. Her transition to life without a dad will be difficult, but many supporters are working hard to keep her life as comfortable as possible from now on.

Provide perpetual support

James Northcott, commonly known as “Trey,” lived in Texas for most of his life, but recently moved to Eugene, Oregon for a change of scenery. His emotional support dog, Cami, is by his side every step of the way. Trey struggles with his drug addiction and mental health, and Cami is there to comfort him through life’s ups and downs.

But on July 4, 2021, Trey died suddenly. He had a pulmonary embolism. Many believe Cami tried to seek human help, but medical professionals did not arrive in time. Trey took a nap and never woke up. Of course, Cami still refused to leave his side at all.

“The emergency came and they said they were really working hard for him, but it was too late, but Cami was there to see it all, and we are really glad she did. with him,” said Trey’s mother, Susan Cox. “I just hope the final months of his life are the best in Oregon.”

With no other family in Oregon, Cami was transferred to the Greenhill Humane Society. Trey’s family in Texas wanted to bring Cami to them, but she was too old to sit in the cabin. They began to lose hope until Danielle Stewart, president and founder of the Apollo Rescue and Aid Foundation, heard their story.

Cami Heads Home

Stewart was on a dog transport mission from Texas to pre-approved adopters north. She was moving back to Texas anyway, so someone contacted her about Cami.

“They share stories and say, ‘Hey, you’re not going up to the Pacific Northwest to adopt dogs, and I said, I definitely am,’” Stewart said. “So she shared the story with me, and it immediately touched my heart.”

Without hesitation, Stewart plans to pick up Cami and take her home. At the shelter, they didn’t know the puppy’s name at first, so they named her Sammy. It was just a coincidence that the two names were so similar.

Stewart posted a live video on Facebook of her picking up Cami and putting her in the van. Despite going through a lot of suffering, Cami is still enthusiastic and loves to give kisses to everyone she meets. She was the perfect passenger on a cross-country drive.

Now, Cami is home to many familiar faces, including Trey’s girlfriend, mother, and sister. She couldn’t bring her best friend back to life, but she was able to live her life to the fullest, thanks to everyone who fought for her. Her big journey back to Texas was worth it!
