Sean Kingston and his mother arrested on wire fraud charges

The 61-year-old mother and her 34-year-old son were charged with five counts of wire fraud. They were also charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. A grand jury in Miami returned the indictment earlier this month, according to the Associated Press. The couple made their first court appearance Friday (July 19).

Kingston and Turner are said to have lived up to their reputation as 305 con men. Officials say they hatched a scheme to steal jewellery, luxury whips and other expensive goods from a number of businesses.

Prosecutors hoped to prove that Sean and Janice would purchase luxury items under the false impression that they were sending money via wire transfer. Ultimately, the businesses discovered that the payments were supposed to go through. Additionally, they failed to return the items after defaulting on payments. Through this elaborate scheme, the family members were left with more than $1 million in assets.

For example, Sean Kingston and Janice Turner allegedly fled in a $160,000 Cadillac Escalade. They also stole more than $480,000 in jewelry. Meanwhile, the car salesman and jeweler were left holding their hands up. In addition, prosecutors say the pair defrauded banks—$100,000 from First Republic Bank and more than $200,000 from Bank of America. A bed maker is also said to owe $86,000 for customization services. All of this allegedly took place between October and March.

Details of the arrest of the mother and son

Sean Kingston was arrested on May 23. Officers arrested the ‘Beautiful Girls’ singer in Fort Irwin, California. The incident occurred just hours after the Broward Sheriff’s Office raided his rented home in Fort Lauderdale. Turner was also arrested that same day.

If convicted on all six counts, Sean and Janice could face up to 20 years in prison in the Sunshine State. Kingston’s attorney, Robert Rosenblatt, reportedly left the AP in read mode but previously told the news agency they were “confident” the case would reach “a successful resolution.”
