Good morning everyone, especially…

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER

Yes that’s good. Yes great. And then there’s whatever type of heater you want to say that Scottie Scheffler recently had. With this weekend’s win at Travelers Championship at the TPC River Plateau in Cromwell, Conn., Scheffler now has a notable six wins in his last 10 starts.

For context, we’ll take a minute and list the names of every golfer who has recorded six wins in a PGA Tour season before July 1 since 1960 — Arnold Palmer (1960 , 1962) and now Scheffler in 2024. Two. That’s the list.

But that doesn’t mean Sunday’s victory was without drama. At the final regulation hole of the tournament, Protesters armed with smoke bombs stormed the lawn while the game is going on. The disruption was soon resolved, but when play resumed, Scheffler missed the putt that would have won him the event in 72 holes. Tom Kim, the leader after holes 18, 36 and 54, capitalized on a birdie, forcing a sudden-death playoff start on the same hole. Scheffler shoots across; Kim was fooled. And that’s your tournament.

Planner pocketed $3.6 million for the win, bringing his record 2024 PGA Tour earnings to $28 million. As he does for us every week, our Kyle Porter explains the brilliance of Scottie Scheffler.

  • Porters: “The craziest realization (and best compliment) about Scottie is that this has become rote. Another week, Scheffler wins again. Yawn. That’s become part of the fan trend golf grave to what’s happening. The numbers go against the grain of what he’s doing because the numbers tell the following story: This simply never happened.”

INDIANA FEVER

Round 3 of Caitlin Clark and Indiana fever compare to Reese’s Angel and Chicago sky went to the sky. It was a great game, although one might have expected the Fever to feel especially upset since they had a 15-point lead with 11:29 left in the game. Then the roof came down as the Fever were outscored 31-15 the rest of the way to an 88-87 loss.

The Sky played a great game — and we’ll have more to say about that later because Chicago deserved it — but from Indiana’s perspective, the Fever couldn’t get a late basket and were blown kills across the board to the tune of 38-25, including 7-1 on the offensive glass.

The funny thing is, the Fever’s loss was the game’s win as these two rivals are quickly becoming one of the best in sports. After three meetings in the past three weeks, it seems cruel that we have to wait another two months for their final meeting of the regular season in Chicago on August 30. Our Jack Maloney was at in the building and from his perspective the entire time. When he arrived in Chicago, Reese simply “flipped the switch and lit up Wintrust Arena.”

  • Maloney: “First, an incredible catch-and-finish in first-half transition, then a pair of 7-0 free throws in the final minute of the third quarter cut the deficit down to single digits… She carried that energy into the fourth quarter game and was unstoppable in the paint. NaLyssa Smith and the Fever had no answer for Reese’s energy and physicality, and she scored consistently in dropouts and losses. With less than a minute to play, she checked in on Smith and moved around her to gain the go-ahead. ‘I’m a fool, you can’t teach that,’ Reese said in the starting interview.

🥇 Sha’Carri Richardson will attend the Olympics

In a way, it takes Sha’Carri Richardson three years to run 100 meters. On Saturday night, Richardson tore through Eugene, Ore., right away United States Olympic Track and Field Trials and finished first in 10.71 seconds, the fastest run by a woman on the planet this year. The win helps the 24-year-old Richardson on her first US Olympic team.

Those who know Richardson’s story will recall how her victory in the Tokyo Olympics trials three years ago was nullified after testing positive for marijuana, a drug she said she Used it after his mother’s death.

“The message I want to say now is to believe in yourself, no matter what the outside noise is going on, stay strong within yourself,” Richardson said after Saturday’s race. “Not just yourself, your beliefs. Those are two things that will never change, as long as you don’t change. Be strong about yourself and your hard work every day out there.”

Richardson will be joined by Melissa Jefferson And Twanisha Terry, finished second and third in the 100 meters with times of 10.8 and 10.89 respectively.

“I feel honored,” Richardson said. “I feel like every chapter I’ve been through in my life has prepared me for this moment.”

In the men’s 100 meter event, Noah Lyles achieved a personal best of 9.83 Sunday night to punch tickets to Paris. Kenny Bendarek (9.87) and Fred Kerley (9.88) finished second and third to secure the position.

“[Winning was] part of the plan. Nothing’s changed,” the ever-confident Lyles told NBC Sports after the race. “It might be a shock to everyone else, but when you know the target, you know the target.”

🏀 Rookie Sky did something that hasn’t been seen since 1998

When Chicago sky drafted two major issues in Reese’s Angel And Kamilla Cardoso in April WNBA Draft there are some questions about how the two will play together. With a 6-9 record and eighth place, that part is still a work in progress, but Sky’s new recruits combined to do something on Sunday that the league hasn’t seen since 1998.

Reese and Cardoso each scored at least 15 points and collected at least 10 rebounds in Chicago’s thrilling 88-87 victory, a feat not recorded since the second year of the WNBA’s existence. Reese (25 points, 16 rebounds) led the Sky comeback, which began late in the third quarter. Cardoso (16 points, 10 rebounds) gave this overall pick her third double-double of her career.

But doubles is turning into just another day at the office for Reese, who — need we remind everyone — doesn’t get drafted until Saturday. She now has eight straight, extending her own WNBA rookie record. Additionally, Reese became the first rookie to record at least 25 points and 15 rebounds in a game since then. ⚾ The Phillies edge the Yankees in the latest MLB Power Rankings

When you king of the hill a week, top of the pile next game, and then you lose six of eight, there’s only one conclusion any responsible baseball journalist has to come to — you no longer have No.1. So with that in mind, let’s take our Matt Snyder Start spreading the news with his latest MLB Power Rankings.

  • Snyder: The Yankee has held the top spot for several weeks and has just received Gerrit Cole back into the rotation, but they have now lost three series in a row. Sure, the series faces stiff competition, but Top Dog shouldn’t worry about that. They have lost 6 of their last 8 matches, so a drop in points is natural.

As for the Phillies, it’s easy to argue for them at No. 1 even if they’re dealing with some injuries.

  • Snyder: They have the best record in baseball both in games (yankee wins 0.5 games) and winning percentage. Their +114 run differential is the best in baseball. They have struggled a bit recently but are on a 4-2 week with two straight wins. When looking at personnel, they certainly look the part. There isn’t an obvious weakness. They have the best ERA in baseball and are fourth in runs scored. They have also had to deal with some significant injuries.

Here are Matt’s top 5:

  1. Phillies (previous: 3)
  2. Yellow (previous: 2)
  3. Yankees (previous: 1)
  4. Guardian (previous: 5)
  5. Dodgers (previous: 4)
