Rivian CEO aims to build one million electric vehicles by 2030

US electric vehicle (EV) launch Rivian is aiming to produce one million electric vehicles a year by 2030 despite recent production and supply chain challenges.

In a recent interview with Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe, Reuters reports that the EV startup is hoping to build “much more as we enter the 2030s.”

For context, Tesla produced 930,422 vehicles in 2021, and CEO Elon Musk said the company could produce 20 million vehicles per year by 2032.

Achieving this annual production target of one million units, Mr. Scaringe said, “will require a wide variety of vehicles, platforms and sizes”.

Mr. Scaringe recently said on Twitter that the EV startup is on the rise achieved the annual production target by 2022 of 25,000 vehicles.

Rivian also said it is now “increasing production and deliveries” for the R1T, R1S SUV and EDV700 long-wheelbase vans.

In addition to confirming Rivian’s 2030 production target, Mr. Scaringe also said the company is looking at a number of different applications of the so-called RCV platform, which underpins the EDV700 full-size delivery van.

“We are thinking about many other aspects of the commercial space beyond last-mile delivery (including) vans and trucks,” said Mr. Scaringe.

“We’ve had a lot of discussions with other customers.”

It remains unclear what RCV-based commercial vehicles Rivian has in operations at this stage.

As detailed earlier, Amazon has ordered 100,000 of these EDV700 delivery trucks.

Scaringe also said Rivian is planning a range of smaller commercial vehicles that could share components with the EV startup’s upcoming R2 crossover.

These smaller commercial vehicles will be built at Rivian’s second production facility in the state of Georgia, USA.

As previously reported, Rivian has struggled with high shipping costs and supply chain issues that have resulted in it producing just 2553 vehicles in the first quarter of 2022.

It also recorded a quarterly net loss of $1.59 billion ($A2.3 billion) in the first quarter, followed by almost Loss of US$2.5 billion ($A3.62 billion) in Q4 2021.

The following, Ford sells off more than $400 million ($A579.87 million) of its stake in Rivian in May 2022. However, Blue Oval still holds nearly 87 million Rivian shares.

In November 2021, Ford and Rivian canceled an EV project they jointly developed, which would see Rivian’s skateboard EV architecture underpin Ford and Lincoln.

Rivian has yet to finalize its plans to introduce in Australia, but previously said in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission that it plans to enter major markets in the Asia-Pacific, with other markets.
