Riley Mott wins first race in youth training career
It’s been a pretty good week in Kentucky for the Mott family.
On November 5, coach Bill Mott won two Breeders’ Cup races at Keenelandwith Godolphin’s Cody’s Wish captures November 5 Big Ass Fans Breeders ‘Cup Dirt Mile (G1) and Juddmonte’s Elite power competed in the Qatar Racing Breeder’s Cup Sprint (G1). Then on November 10, Mott’s son, Riley, scored the first goal of his youth coaching career when Unified lead during the sixth race at Churchill Downsa restricted $90,900 maiden race for 2-year-olds.
Under the guidance of Florent Geroux, Unifying accelerated to take the lead and far ahead of the opponent with a 1 3/4 victory.
“Good day, really been looking forward to that all my life,” said Riley, who watched the race on his cell phone from Hot Springs, Ark., where he has 15 horses at the ready for the upcoming meeting at Oaklawn Park.
Riley, 30, said he left a few horses in Kentucky to run at Churchill Downs. Kenny McCarthy, Bill Mott’s longtime Kentucky assistant, took the helm of his winner on Thursday.
Unifying made $52,320 for owners Sheri Greenberg, Staghawk Stables, Tom Reiman and Ronald Johnson in her second startup. Before that, she placed second at her debut on September 15 in Belmont at the Big A meeting at Aqueduct race track for the eldest Mott. On Thursday, Union Rags filly races six feathers in 1:11.17, paying $4.90 to win.
