Riley Mott wins first race in youth training career


It’s been a pretty good week in Kentucky for the Mott family.

On November 5, coach Bill Mott won two Breeders’ Cup races at Keenelandwith Godolphin’s Cody’s Wish captures November 5 Big Ass Fans Breeders ‘Cup Dirt Mile (G1) and Juddmonte’s Elite power competed in the Qatar Racing Breeder’s Cup Sprint (G1). Then on November 10, Mott’s son, Riley, scored the first goal of his youth coaching career when Unified lead during the sixth race at Churchill Downsa restricted $90,900 maiden race for 2-year-olds.

Under the guidance of Florent Geroux, Unifying accelerated to take the lead and far ahead of the opponent with a 1 3/4 victory.

“Good day, really been looking forward to that all my life,” said Riley, who watched the race on his cell phone from Hot Springs, Ark., where he has 15 horses at the ready for the upcoming meeting at Oaklawn Park.

Riley, 30, said he left a few horses in Kentucky to run at Churchill Downs. Kenny McCarthy, Bill Mott’s longtime Kentucky assistant, took the helm of his winner on Thursday.

Unifying made $52,320 for owners Sheri Greenberg, Staghawk Stables, Tom Reiman and Ronald Johnson in her second startup. Before that, she placed second at her debut on September 15 in Belmont at the Big A meeting at Aqueduct race track for the eldest Mott. On Thursday, Union Rags filly races six feathers in 1:11.17, paying $4.90 to win.

<p>A native of Hollywood, Fla., Riley supported her father for nearly nine years before passing away on her own this fall.  Unity is his third starter, all of them coming this month at Churchill Downs</p>
<p>“My dad hopes he’s as happy today as he was last week,” Riley said.  “It was great to do well on that lap, to win my first race at Churchill. Obviously my dad has a lot of history there. The track was really good for him. I was also pretty easy. easy to win the first race there.”</p>
<p>His father had been the most winning coach in Churchill Downs history before he was overtaken by Dale Romans and later Steve Asmussen.  Elder Mott set the record for the number of wins in a single meeting by Churchill Downs, 54, during the spring meeting in 1984.</p>
<p>The Hall of Famer then began shipping his stables around the race in New York while maintaining a smaller division in Kentucky.  He won the Eclipse Award as an outstanding coach in 1995-96 and 2011.</p>
<p>Riley said he hopes to pick up a few more horses from the ranch to race at Oaklawn and potentially others from the Keeneland Race Age Horse Sale, taking place next week.</p>
<p>“I’ll be in (Arkansas) through the winter and hopefully back in Kentucky in the spring,” he said.</p>
