Some games are very neat, concise, and organized. Everything is laid out in front of the player. You know what they’re getting into when you start playing. It is a treatment. Little Noah: Scion of Paradise, Granblue Fantasy roguelike by the creator of Cygames, is an exciting adventure that can be enjoyed in large or small doses, gradually making someone feel satisfied. It was a wonderful surprise.
Little Noah may look familiar, at least in terms of its appearance. It’s because of the Original Version of the game, which everyone may know as Battle ChampsIs one Clash of clans the type of game that Akihiko Yoshida and Hitoshi Sakimoto participate in. Little Noah: Scion of Paradise shares the same protagonist as the alchemist Noah, as well as her spaceship and Lilliput champions. In this adventure, however, she encounters rubble, an amnesiac cat, and a power-hungry villain named Greigh while searching for her lost father. In the process, it hints that she will be dragged into a world-changing adventure.
Alchemy, the flow of mana, and otherworldly magic are concentrated in the mystical ruins that serve as the foundation for this roguelike. Why is it different every time you enter the dungeon? Magic! Why did Noah get involved? Magic! (Specifically, the mana to fix her airship and the answers regarding her father and new cat friend Zipper.) Why are so many strong enemies? Magic! That’s actually a good reason to quit. Also, it conveniently offers a logical explanation for why Noah was even able to summon Lilliputs to fight for her.
Because technically, Noah isn’t one to fight in Little Noah. When you jump down from the spaceship into the wreckage, you’ll start with three Lilliputs after landing. So she will depart with Huey, Ratty and Thump. As she walks past chests, alchemy pots, and shops in ruins, she will be able to get new Lilliputs. She will also find crystals that can increase her attack power in different ways, and accessories that give bonus effects. All of these increase her overall power level, which starts at D when she first jumps down. By getting copies of Lilliputs, their power increases and they eventually gain passive abilities. The first five Lilliputs placed create a combo of attacks against the enemy. The two remaining in A and X will use a skill that has a cooldown.
This means that there are many factors that determine the success of a run. After walking through the ruins, which feel like platforming segments with lots of enemies to defeat and sometimes rewarding challenges, you’ll be faced with branching points and bosses. Falling in battle will turn all your earned accessories and Lilliputs into mana for repairs. Said fix is really geared towards investing in skill trees that boost stats, granting Noah abilities like Aether Thrust dash in mid-air, or the option to mount potions that restore HP and add stations on the airship so you are more prepared for the run. So after each tour, you’re spending time rebuilding and regrouping.
But the nature of hybrid systems means that much also depends on working with what you are given. Little Noah. You can let the game automatically choose the lineup. But each Lilliput has its own power rating, attack type, and factor. So in one of my better runs, I had the wind-type Chuck and the fire-type Flame Dragon. Chuck performs a slash in a combo that launches enemies (and Noah) into the air. Flame Dragon uses a flaming dive bomb attack. So if you put them in turn, Chuck will knock them up and Flame Dragon knocks them down. Since you don’t know who you’ll get, a test opportunity means seeing how certain types of moves interact. And, since most moves are pretty consistent and Lilliputs are plentiful, it’s pretty easy to find the right formulas.
I also found that it is possible to “play” the system. Even if you are not technically strong enough for an area, Little Noah very good about telegram attacks. This is especially true for bosses. Another perk is Little Noah being a roguelike keeps things going. The only confused feeling I went through was wondering if there was something wrong with uploading the Switch version’s save files. (There will be about 30 seconds of a black screen, sometimes with sound and no picture, before it ends and takes you back to the action.) All information is clearly displayed before your eyes as you explore. . You can see hints about the characteristics of the surrounding rooms. In the main menu, Lilliputs attacks are clearly defined. There are even images showing the range of attacks, to help prepare possible combos. The doors that lead to the next areas will hint at what you can find in that ruin. Tree upgrades are clear about what to expect from them. Whenever you make a choice, you are fully aware of the consequences.
I’m shocked at how fun and well-functioning Little Noah: Scion of Paradise To be. It’s a roguelike tick all the boxes to the right. It is accessible, but there are still many challenges. You can go in knowing you’re going to grow a little stronger, but the unpredictability of which Lilliputs you’ll have and the randomization keeps things fresh. Enemies can be quite strong, but it is still possible to learn patterns and survive through proper planning and discernment. This is a great game and one of the better surprises of 2022.
