Reverse lanes activated on KL-Karak highway at KM123.10-KM124.70 towards Kuantan for three months
Highway concessionaire ANIH has announced the activation of reverse lanes on the KL-Karak (KLK) highway for a period of three months, starting yesterday.
The upstream lane, running from KM 123.10 to KM 124.70 in the direction of Kuantan, will allow traffic even though this section of road has been closed for flood mitigation projects. According to ANIH executive chairman Datuk Nik Fauzi Nik Hussein, while a reverse lane has been designated for the stated stretch of road, it can be modified to suit and traffic needs.
The expressway operator says the closure of the stretch will allow it to carry out a number of important workflows such as renovating the main line and surrounding areas, raising the elevation of the main line, comprehensively improving existing waterways, and undertaking the construction of additional waterways in the area.
It added that the scope of this work will involve the 14 areas that have been identified on the main route in the Highway’s Right of Right of Way (RoW). The Flood Mitigation Project is intended to cope with the increase in river levels and rainwater catchment areas that have previously affected the route.
Since the opening of the LPT1 route, there have been 4 flooding cases in 2007, 2014, January 2021 and December 2021, closing the highway to all vehicles for several days.
The entire flood mitigation project, expected to last four years, involves raising the existing pavement based on the highest recorded floodwater levels as well as applying measures in the affected area to prevent water from entering the main roadway.
