Renault and Airbus team up to develop long-range electric vehicle technology

The Renault Group has signed an agreement with Airbus to research and develop new energy management systems and more energy-efficient batteries.

Engineering groups from the automaker and aerospace giant will collaborate and focus on improving energy storage and reducing energy consumption for long-range electric vehicles and “airplanes” electric future”.

The pair say the partnership agreement “will seek to find the best avenues” to switch from current cell chemistries to all-solid-state designs that could double the energy density of the batteries in the chassis. the year 2030.

The joint work will also study the entire future battery life, from manufacture to recyclability, “to prepare for the industrialization of these futuristic battery designs while also assessing global carbon emissions.” their life cycle”.

“Aeronautics is a demanding sector both in terms of safety and energy consumption, and so is the automotive industry,” said Renault Group technical director Gilles Le Borgne.

“… Driven by the same ambition to innovate and reduce carbon emissions, our engineering teams are working with the people of Airbus to converge cross-cutting technologies that enable hybrid aircraft to operate as well. and develop the vehicles of the future,” he added.

Airbus Chief Technology Officer Sabine Klauke added that “combining the Renault Group’s experience in electric vehicles with our track record in electric flight demonstrations will allow us to accelerate the development of technologies breakthroughs needed for future hybrid aircraft architecture in the 2030s and beyond.”

Airbus separately announced this week that hydrogen fuel cell-powered engine architecture with cryogenic storage is possible in an all-new zero-emissions plane that will enter service in 2035.

“Airbus is well on its way to designing, building and demonstrating such a megawatt-level propulsion system in less than four years from now,” the company said.
