Gervonta Davis has fluctuated up and down in many weight classes while winning world titles throughout the past few years.
In 2019, after a successful streak at 130 pounds, Davis advanced another 5 pounds north to take on the long-fading former champion, Yuriokis Gamboa, for the now vacant 135-pound WBA crown. . Davis would continue to brutalize Gamboa, stopping him in the 12th and final round. A year later, Davis returned to the featherweight superweight division, scoring a knockout goal in the sixth round against Leo Santa Cruz.
To keep his penchant for breaking through weight classes continued, Davis challenged then-WBA “Normal” title winner Mario Barrios, at 140 pounds. With Davis scoring another stoppage-time win, the violent knockout excelled at the lightweight.
With a win over Isaac Cruz in December 2021 to defend his 135-pound sub-title, Davis will return to the ring May 28, facing Rolando “Rolly” Romero. Though Davis is firmly pinning his flag at 135 pounds, Regis Prograis is hopeful that he will change his mind.
For the better part of the past 12 months, whether or not Davis and Prograis have had many verbal difficulties with each other. Despite the buzz back and forth, the former 140-pound player is now focusing most of his efforts on his upcoming match against Tyrone McKenna. The two will play this weekend at the Duty Free Tennis Stadium in Dubai.
However, even as Prograis focuses on McKenna, that doesn’t stop him from detailing how his confrontation with Davis will ultimately play out.
“I’m going to hit him,” Prograis said in an interview with Fight Hub TV. “Too big, too fast, too strong. I have a chin, I’m still active. ”
Aside from Prograis vehemently supporting their mock match, the much-respected former champion doesn’t believe their contest will be a close one. While respecting Davis and his fierce fighting prowess, Prograis was confident that if they did fight, it would essentially be a walk in the park.
“He’s a big puncher, he’s skilled, he’s a nampaw. I think he can be slick sometimes but when he goes into battle mode, he’s like someone just like me, like he likes to fight. Once I get a hold of my rhythm, I think it’ll probably be a pretty comfortable fight. He was beaten a lot. You can’t get hit by me too much”.
