Quintet of Yearlings Hits $750,000 at Keeneland


Selling just below the market highs on the second day of Book 2 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale were five yearlings that sold for $750,000. They were picked up by some of the most active buyers in the first four days of the sale and included the following:

Hip 818, a chestnut colt Gunman out of bet winners and multiple bet makers Giant Movers (Giant’s Causeway). Sent by St George Sales for the second stage of Dell Ridge Farm, the colt was purchased by agent Mike Ryan and will be sent to trainer Chad Brown in New York.

“He’s had a lot of action and a lot of big players and he’s a very nice horse,” said consignor Archie St George. “He’s arguably the top stallion in North America and from a good mare, he’s been bred by a very good farm. Des (Ryan) and Dell Ridge have done a fantastic job and thanks to Chad (Brown) and good luck to them.”

The colt Gun Runner, sired by Dell Ridge, is a half-brother to the Grade 1, Grade 2 winner Family tree (Smart Strike) and the winner of 2nd place Liora (Candy Trip ), who finished runner-up in the 2019 Kentucky Oaks (G1).

“She’s a very beautiful mare. Her greatest gift is her athleticism,” said Jim Robinson. “She looks like a racehorse. She has a beautiful gait. The people who watched the bidding told me there were six different bidders for her.”

The Strong Comeback Continues for Gun Runner

MV Magnier and Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm partners welcomed their sixth yearling in September with Hip 865, a chestnut colt by Gun Runner consigned by Warrendale Sales.

“He’s a big, strong colt, very light on his feet, just an easy horse to move and I think that’s what draws people to him,” said Warrendale’s Hunter Simms. “It was a very strong day overall. You bring a nice horse here with the right breed strength and you’re rewarded.”

Newstead bred Hip 865 in Kentucky out of the Grade 3 mare Scat Daddy. Kallio is the half-sister of the award winner Clear the runway (Broken Vow). Gun Runner was represented by 16 yearlings sold on September 12, bringing in a total of $6.1 million and an average of $381,250 per auction.

Sf RAcing Partnership Lands Justify Colt

Hip 871 is one of 10 yearlings from Ashford Stud Alignment to sell for more than $400,000 since the sale began. ELiTE consigned the dark brown or tan colt to WinStar Farm, which bred and raised the colt. SF Racing’s Tom Ryan signed the colt on behalf of a partnership that included SF Racing, Starlight Racing and Madaket Stables.

“He’s a gorgeous colt. We’ve watched Justify grow up at WinStar and it’s great to see them producing such quality animals with such a great stallion,” Ryan said. “We’ll be putting him in the Bob Baffert program and hopefully he’ll have a bright future.”
