Preview: Monster Hunter Stories 2 Feel at home on PS4

Monster Hunter 2 Story: Ruined Wings is one of my favorite games of 2021 on Nintendo Switch, and I definitely consider it one of the most underrated JRPGs of this decade. The game is finally here PlayStation game console with the long-awaited PS4 port. Three years later, I still feel good after spending some time with this release.

Turned out, Monster hunter story 2 Works just as well on PS4 as it does on Nintendo Switch. Based on my initial experience, it could actually be even better. I’ve never played this game on PC, so I don’t benefit from the performance and visual improvements there. Trying out the port via my PS5 revealed some notable differences.

First, the resolution is sharper. Monster hunter story 2 It looks better on TV now than when I first played it in TV mode on the Switch. Additionally, in-game performance ensured its frame rate was fairly stable during the time I tested this version. I took this opportunity to review the first few hours of opening which I have become quite familiar with. The game wastes no time getting started with a bombastic opening, before slowing down to enjoy the laidback vibe of island life as your player character — a Monster Rider rather than a Hunter like core series — start learning the ropes.

The original area of Hakolo Island instantly looks a lot better in this version. The coastline looks gorgeous, while my custom character and monsters don’t look lackluster or anything like I remember on the Switch. This JRPG’s almost cel-shaded look looks impressive when played with backwards compatibility on PS5.

Immediately, whoever plays the core role Monster hunter the game should know this is a completely different experience. And this is its benefit. Monster hunter story 2 on PS4 is the same as Pokemon title. Players travel around the world to various regions and collect eggs of various iconic monsters such as Rathalos. You then hatch these eggs to use the monsters as your partners in battles. The battles themselves take place with a strict triangular elemental system.

This system focuses on red attacks defeating green ones defeating blue ones etc. However, there is a lot more to this system than meets the eye. For example, you can find it separately from your current monster partner at any time. This makes for an interesting dual combat situation. However, you can also jump on your friend’s back and team up together. This brings stronger moves but at the cost of sharing your hearts with each other. It’s a surprisingly lean and deep system, with room for experimentation. After all, you can even have your Rider switch between weapon types as well as the core weapon series during battle.

All of these different concepts can make battles long and arduous, something mainline fans may be familiar with. Herein lies a great challenge for those who desire it. For me, though, I just appreciate the idea of a high-quality, high-budget production Pokemon-like the game on PlayStation.

There aren’t enough monster collecting games of this caliber on PlayStation. At least, aside from indie titles and some Digimon Game. Monster hunter story 2 is one of the best examples of this intriguing concept, and it hooked me faster than any of the core titles ever did when it first launched, and the PS4 release seems poised to do the same thing. If the first few hours of hatching eggs and completing side missions are anything to go by, this sleeker and smoother port on PlayStation might just hook me again.

Monster Hunter 2 Story: Ruined Wings releases on PS4 on June 14, 2024.
