Rescue dogs are the most loyal creatures on the planet. Most of them would risk their lives to save the loving members of their family. A brave Pit Bull didn’t think twice when her little brother was in danger. When a venomous snake approached the 5-month-old Pit Bull, the sister jumped out of the way and suffered her own damage.
The Pit Bull Milly is currently out of danger, but his brother Tonka has survived unharmed. She is fighting for her life and getting better every day. Judging by her friendly canine face, she doesn’t have any regrets. She’ll do it again in a heartbeat if that means Tonka is safe.
Family is First
Milly and Tonka were in their yard in Australia when they encountered an oriental brown snake. Fortunately, their mother, a paramedic named Madeline Mills, was at home at the time. She rushed outside to see what was wrong and panicked when she saw that her two rescue dogs were in danger.
There was a snake near Pit Bulls, and Milly showed signs of venom just 5 minutes after being bitten. Mills didn’t know exactly what happened, so she rushed both dogs to the emergency vet.
Vets determined Milly had been bitten by snakes several times, but Tonka was not injured. So Tonka was able to go home the next day, but Milly had to stay at the vet for four days. During that time, they injected her with antivenom in hopes of saving her life.
Mills said: “She seemed to have protected her younger brother Tonka, who was not infected with any venom.
Look out for snakes!
Milly is doing better now that she’s at home, but she needs to rest. So she can’t play with Tonka again until she feels better. While her brother is disappointed about it, the whole family is relieved that Milly’s recovery looks promising.
Mills recommends that people living in Australia be extra vigilant with snakes in their yards. Oriental brown snakes are commonly found in people’s yards in Australia and are the species that cause the most human deaths in the country. They usually run away when threatened, but in some cases they will stand up in an S-position and attack.
So you should keep an eye on your dog when outside at all times. Mills suggests that homeowners also keep their lawns short to make it easier to spot snakes.
“Like any other Australian, you just have to be careful,” says Mills. “It’s important to learn the basics of first aid for snakebites and to know the number of snake catchers in your area.”
Milly is such a brave little girl who risked her life for her brother, but luckily, they’re both safe in the comfort of their home.
