Corte Madera, Calif. – PETA – which owns shares in the locally based RH – submitted a shareholder resolution this morning to the company’s board of directors, calling for reporting on the welfare of the birds in the farms and at slaughterhouses in its descending supply chain, out of concern that they are often uprooted or killed en masse in defecting tanks.
“RH’s lack of transparency on welfare claims regarding animals used for devalued treatment raises questions about whether farms and slaughterhouses are in violation of animal welfare laws and allow tearing. live bird feathers,” said PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “The best way shoppers can help prevent birds from suffering and dying from decorative pillows and other household items is by choosing vegan, fiber-free options.”
PETA investigation revealed workers were plucking plumes from live ducks and geese, even on the so-called “responsible farm, ” Often causes bloody wounds as the animals squeal in terror. The workers then stitched the skin together without any pain relief. At the abattoir, birds are often stunned before their throats are cut, so they remain conscious when released into tanks filled with scorching hot water.
PETA — in part, their motto states that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way” — advocates speciesism, a human supremacist worldview . For more information on PETA news collection and reporting, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
