Perodua Myvi is the king of B-segment sales in Malaysia; Toyota Vios/Yaris leads Honda City Sedan/Hatchback

Based on vehicle registration data provided by the Land Transport Authority (JPJ), the Perodua Myvi is leading the sales of B-segment models this year. In the first seven months from January to July, 41,466 units of the “king” were sold, double the number of the Toyota Vios and Yaris combined in second place.

Before looking at other models, a few disclaimers are in order. Firstly, the registration figures are taken from data.gov.my and are publicly available to everyone. Secondly, the JPJ data does not differentiate between body styles for models available as sedans or hatchbacks, as is the case with the Honda City and Mazda 2.

So we decided it would be fairer to compare models offered in both body styles but with different names as one. This is what we did for the Vios and Yaris as well as the Proton Persona and Iriz. We also left out electric vehicles (EVs), which are covered separately in separate article that you should also check out.

As mentioned earlier, the Vios and Yaris took second place with a total of 20,961 units. This was followed by the Honda City in third place with 15,546 units, the Persona and Iriz with a total of 14,960 units, while the Nissan Almera was in last place with 1,256 units and the Mazda 2 with just 32 units.

These rankings are reflected if we look at the sales figures for July 2024, with the Myvi taking the top spot with 6,778 units. This is followed by the Vios and Yaris (3,436 units), the Honda City (2,731 units), the Persona and Iriz (2,446 units), the Nissan Almera (221 units) and the Mazda 2 (five units).

The Myvi has always been a force to be reckoned with in the B-segment and will most likely continue to be the king for the rest of this year and beyond. The more intense battle will be between Honda (City) and Toyota (Vios and Yaris), so make your predictions on which brand will take second place by the end of 2024.
