Over 60 Omega-3 Supplements Affected After Dog Sickness

Stratford Care USA, Inc manufactures omega-3 supplements for dogs and cats under various brands. Now, because a dog showed signs of vitamin A toxicity after ingesting the supplement, the company has issued a voluntary recall as a safety precaution.

62 products were recalled on March 10, 2023 due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin A. Although vitamin A is essential in a healthy diet, taking too much can lead to serious health problems and, in severe cases, death. So, if your dog takes an omega-3 supplement, check to make sure the product you’re using is not subject to a recall.

What products are being recalled?

Stratford Care USA, Inc. is a Florida-based company that distributes supplements throughout the United States. Supplements come in a white plastic container with 60 soft gel capsules. The bottom of each affected product will read “lot 31133 EXP 04/13/23” or “lot 30837 EXP 10/26/22.”

The dangers of elevated vitamin A levels

Vitamin A is good for dogs’ health, but too much can put them at risk. Dogs eating products with high levels of vitamin A may experience nausea, loss of appetite, weakness, tremors, convulsions, or paralysis. In extreme cases, death can occur.

However, there is only one report of vitamin A toxicity associated with these supplements. Hopefully this recall will prevent other dogs from getting sick.

What to do with recalled products?

These supplements are available in a variety of locations, including veterinary clinics, pet supply stores, distribution centers, and online retailers like Amazon and Chewy. If you have purchased any products, stop serving them to your pet immediately. Dispose of remaining supplements in a way that no pets or wildlife can reach them. Veterinarians and retailers should remove products from shelves immediately.
