One month integration special operations The inspection of tourist, public service and commercial vehicles conducted by the Land Transport Department (JPJ) examined a total of 19,456 express buses and tourist buses nationwide.

The inspections, which were carried out from July 2 to 31, resulted in action being taken against 667 buses (417 tourist buses, 250 express buses) for various violations. In addition, 14 buses (12 tourist buses, one express bus) were impounded.

During the operation, JPJ, in collaboration with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), also conducted urine tests on bus drivers. A total of 2,547 drivers were tested for drugs and 26 were found positive. In total, the authorities issued a total of 1,600 notices during the operation.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the special inspection of express buses and tourist buses is to ensure that express buses and tourist buses are safe and comply with all laws, and that drivers are properly licensed and competent to operate these vehicles.

Loke said the government is not relaxing its operations on this front as JPJ is conducting a special commercial vehicle operation this month, focusing on cargo service vehicles, public service vehicles (tourist buses) to ensure that these vehicles comply with technical, traffic and legal standards.

He said that in the first five days of the campaign, which started on August 1 and ended on August 31, a total of 42,343 vehicles were checked and action was taken on 3,725 vehicles, of which 28 were impounded.

During the five-day period, a total of 21 drivers tested positive for drugs out of 276 commercial vehicle drivers tested. “This means that one in 13 drivers was under the influence of drugs while driving, which is a very worrying situation,” he said.

The Transport Minister said that commercial and public vehicle drivers found positive for drugs could be dealt with under Section 36, which has the power to suspend the driving licenses of drug addicts.

He added that the companies involved would also be subject to strict enforcement action under the Road Transport Act 1987 and the Road Public Transport Act, which could result in suspension and cancellation of operating licenses.
