The Biewers were longtime Yorkshire terriers breeders and exhibitors in Germany. On January 20, 1984, one of their offspring, “Frou Frou,” gave them a unique blue, white, and yellow puppy. This little puppy marks the beginning of the Biewer Terrier. They named the breed the German Yorkshire Terrier, but their vet suggested calling it by their name instead, the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier (pronounced like the famous rodent, “beaver”).
The German registry rejected their application for official status, designating these dogs as not for breeding. Mr and Mrs Biewer were heartbroken by the news but were determined to go ahead and start their own registry to document the breed’s growth. The couple spent many years breeding and trying to create the best representatives of the breed. Demand is high but the Biewers are very picky about where the dogs go. Over time, Mr. Biewer became ill and his wife stopped keeping the dog to take care of him. Thankfully that’s not the end of the breed.
How America Met the Biewer Terrier
The Biewer Terrier was introduced into the American mainstream in 2003, at that time there were only a handful of breeders in both Germany and the US. Americans Gayle Pruett and Myrna Torres felt that the story of the breed’s development did not match the appearance of dogs from Germany. They contacted Mars Veterinary Health to determine if a Biewer Terrier is a Yorkshire Terrier. In September 2007, Mars Veterinary said it was ready to publish its tests to identify all suspected breeds that were used in the development of the Biewer. Gayle sent 10 blood samples. This is the first time in the history of dog breeding that a dog has been proven pure by scientific tools. The Biewer Terrier was established as a purebred breed using science, through the collection of genetic data, rather than conventional pedigree documentation.
Later that year, Gayle Pruett and Deb Sidle went to Germany to see Mrs. Biewer. It was an exciting time to exchange information about the development of the breed in the two countries. Mrs. Biewer is pleased to hear that the breed that bears her name is thriving in the United States. She wants to be a part of the breed’s growth here and become a member of the Biewer Terrier Club of America.
